I mostly use bins for birding, beach trips, the Zoo, and some hunting in the Northwest. I tried out many bins at retail stores over the last few months, as well as reading about each one I had interest in. Once I felt like I had gathered enough info I narrowed it down to these Athlon 8x42 or the Vortex Viper 8x42. I wanted something compact, crystal clear, and powerful enough for most of my outdoor needs. I want to note that Athlon and Vortex have very similar warranties, materials, and are both made in China. I went ahead and purchased the Athlon 8x42 after not really being impressed with the Vortex Viper 8x42. I have to tell you they are every bit as clear and then some compared to 500.00 to 800.00 bins from Vortex, Leupold and a number of other brands. They exceeded the quality of the Vortex viper 8x42 I compared them too for almost half the price. I also felt these were a closer match clarity wise to the vortex Razor 8x42. You can clearly see with good detail at 500 yards in open space. You can use these with very little outdoor light too. Magnification wise if you need to see any further than 500 yards you’d be better going with the 10x42 or 10x50. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend these over the two brands above, and am very happy with the value for the dollar. I also purchased Athlon’s Ares 15x45x65 spotting scope. It too has the same clarity and quality along with some excellent features and cool extras you can add to it for shooting or sighting in your rifle at longer distances. When it starts to rain u can quickly place them back over to prevent any water hitting an ruining the back lens .when you first try too individualise the focus , it really comes in handy having the front lens caps attatched , just place the right lens cap over the right lens this allows full control over your binos look through at something about 60 / 100 yards away and use the focus wheel at the centre to get the best clear sharp views u can , when u have achieved this let it alone then remove the right cap , and place the left cap over the left lens , look at the same or roughly the same spot , but this time use the dioptic wheel on the right lens to focus this eye when you have achevied perfect sharp clear image stop remove lens cap and enjoy the new world binos offer , you won't have to touch the focus wheels again now , well unless some little sod lol changes them too suit their 👀 both sets off caps fit reassuringly well to the binoculars, not so tight they are a pain to get off . but provide a good reassuring grab that they won't just fall off , the case they come in is a soft shell case imho well built too im happy with the quality of the case , would recommend these binos happy i got them , but i did get mine for 59 pound over the christmas season deals , if you buy these from desertcart you can send them back no quibble at no fuss from one off there many many drop off places. , which makes trying these at 120.00 risk free imo the build is there the quality sharp view is there , the excellent magnification is there also the fantastic little detail touches that make these an absolute pleasure to use / utilise , i didnt find the weight heavy too have around neck or in the hand for any extended time great buy for me 😃\nReview: Great Quality, Good Image Sharpness, Fabulous Price - I ordered these binoculars for my wife as since retiring, we have recently returned to birdwatching. Running the wire is a task but for the speed and reliability of having the cameras on Ethernet and the ability to access the camera multiple ways instantly is absolutely worth the hassle of running the wires from the cameras to your NVR. I decided I wanted to run my own cat6 Ethernet cable rather than using the cabling provided so that I could cable manage and be a little more accurate with the cable length than the cables that were provided. I also chose to buy a 10U server rack to mount in my basement to hold my NVR and a patch panel to run the cat6 to. I also decided to buy an UPS because in the case of a power outage I still want my security cameras to run. I then got myself 8 security camera junction boxes(on desertcart), some 1/2 in conduit and connectors and a main junction box to run all the conduit to. I then drilled an 1 inch hole in the back of the junction box picked where I wanted all the wires to go into my basement and drilled about a 1 inch hole from the outside of my house to inside my basement. It’s taking me about an hour and a half to about two hours per camera after I got the main junction box, server rack and NVR all set up. That means installing the camera junction boxes where I want the camera, running the cat6 through the conduit, tipping the cat6 cable to connect to the camera through the junction boxes and to the patch panel on my sever rack, hanging the conduit and running it to the main junction box and finally installing the cameras onto the little junction boxes. It is a chore but again for the ability to access the cameras through multiple means instantly is worth it. The quality of the cameras is great especially during the day and the night vision works well in dark areas at night. If any areas are lite at night or cars drive by, I recommend turning the IR lights off but keeping it on auto day and night. That will eliminate the night vision but will record in black and white, which if there is a street light for example on, then the quality will be fine. Otherwise you might get some unwanted glare during night time in those areas. You have the ability to connect the NVR via HDMI to a monitor or computer and can access the cameras and setting right there. You can also get access to the stream anywhere with the app. You will need to creat a log in on the NVR first or use the Admin login information to be able to initially view your cameras but after the first time you won’t need to log in again. And finally you can also access your cameras anywhere on your local network by just web browsing the IP address of the NVR. All of these means of viewing the video stream are instantaneous and light years more reliable then any wireless camera on the market. Even if you don’t want to install the cameras yourself, you can hire a company to run the wires for you. Just tell them you already bought the security system. You’ll probably spend close to 1,000$ I’m sure. Especially if you have 8 cameras to run wires for bit your already about to drop 800$ on the security system itself, just saying. Overall great product so far. Absolutely recommend, especially if you have some sort of general understanding of running Ethernet or wiring in general. After serious research, I finally decided on the Reolink POE system. After setup, I have to admit Im very impressed. First pleasant surprise was the ease of connection setup. Simply scan the QR code on front of the unit, and suddenly we were communicating with all the cameras. Next pleasant surprise was the iPhone app. Again, we just scan the QR code with the iphone camera and instantly we were seeing all of our cameras. No port forward setup, no DDNS configurations, etc. It was great. And now for my favorite surprise - wiring. I discovered that if I installed an inexpensive POE Switch at a remote location, I could then run cameras from this POE Switch, rather than pulling new wire all the way back to the Camera NVR unit. Great! I installed a 5 port POE Switch in our barn (about 250ft away from the NVR unit that is in basement of the house) and connected it to our router. Now, using CAT6 wiring, I can add up to 4 cameras in and around the barn, without requiring individual runs all the way back to the NVR. Extended my distance away from the NVR too! Simply fantastic. We currently have 11 cameras online, including 1 to watch the nearby field and treeline for wildlife. The grandson loves to watch this camera at dark, looking at the deer, and zooming in with touch of a finger. We are still setting up the motion sensitivity (a little too sensitive at factory settings) and push notifications, but it should be a valuable addition to our farm when finished. Luckily it was easy to prize off the bezel and find the screws holding the screen module to the brackets. Only 4 tiny screws secure the screen to the bracket and another 4 screws hold the bracket to the plastic casing when there should be 6. I used some rapid set plastic glue to fill the void around the broken plastic screw point and added the needed extra small screws to fit the bracket correctly to the plastic case. If desertcart hadn't put the package box inside another larger box with their complimentary brown toilet roll allowing it to roll around, it probably would not have suffered this damage during transit!... Update Oct 2023 - The transformer has failed even when plugged into a surge protected multiway extension lead. Poor quality. Sustained viewing is relatively easy for me, and no, I am neither huge nor built like a weight-lifter. Sharpness, clarity, color and flatness of field are all terrific -- you would have to really scratch around with minor details to say how a pair of Swarovskis (where I can make direct real-life comparisons) is much better. Internal reflections are well-controlled, although a little bit of flare can appear in some high contrast conditions. The focus control is very smooth and definite, which you really need on 12x50s because the depth of field of focus is narrower than on 8x42s. I have found I have adapted quickly to focusing a bit more, so it's not a big issue for me. The field of view is of course narrower than x8s, but I have not really noticed this much, even when searching for small birds in foliage. And when you do see the bird, the image is much larger, so you have a better image and a better chance of identifying it. Low light viewing is good. One last thing: the difference between x8 and x12 is that the *linear* image is x1.5 larger on the x12, but it is over x2 larger in *area* terms, so the visual impression looking through x12s is startlingly different -- the images seem huge in comparison. I love this. Some other lesser but still important issues. Lens caps are great. Eye relief is good, and the twist-out eyecups are fine. It is true that if your eyes are very close together you might have a problem with these binoculars. My eyes are quite close together, but these binoculars are fine -- the barrels can still move closer at my setting. I have to wonder if the problems other readers were having occurred in this area might have occurred because they did not move the rubber retaining rings of the objective covers further towards the middle of the barrel. If you don't do this, then the rubber rings bump into each other at the fat ends of the barrels and stop the binoculars from being brought together by a significant amount. At first I thought I would have to send the binoculars back because I did not notice this, but I looked at the rings, moved them up, and of course it was fine. The whole deal comes with a good case and strap, and with that Athlon warranty. In case you can't guess from all of this, I am very, very, very happy with these binoculars. A further note: I already have a pair of 8x42 Athlon Midas binoculars, and they are superb for their price range, as my review will show here on desertcart. I also have a pair of pocket 10x25 Athlon Midas binoculars, very happy with those also. Its somewhere around that number. I've always upgraded and I never keep this old cameras around me what so ever. Currently posses the Nikon D5500, GoPro 4 Silver, and this camera. My last pocket camera was the Sony RX100 M2. I was originally waiting for the Sony RX100 M5 to come out but it never did until last month. I decided to buy this G7X M2 camera since its $700. Part of the big reason is the LCD screen able to flip 180 degrees. Great for vlogging and seeing what you are filming. This camera came out in this summer and it was still cheaper than the Sony RX100 M4 even till this day, which came out in mid 2015. The Sony RX100 M5 came out and its $1000. That's a $300 difference. How much different between the photos and videos? Not much. 4K, Slow Mo, Super Slow Mo, Super Duper Slow Mo, okay but do you use it all the time? For me, I wont spend that kind of money for a pocket camera. This $700 is more than viable for the things I do. Do purchase a screen protector. Lexmor been my favorite but they have not made one for them yet. The screen protector I have is very flimsy but its doable for now. Do get extra batteries. On 60FPS for video it shoots 16 minutes and 24 seconds max. It can record over 1 hours with a canon battery. I always have extra batteries. I know its a bit pricey $50 for canon battery but hey do you want your camera exploding in your face? I did have great experience with Wasabi batteries not sure they made a generic one for this model yet. Overall I like this camera and it gets the job done. I didn't want the lens to protrude while off. I've attached a screen shot of the pic I took with this camera. It was a minor touch up with VSCO filter. I've already ordered this in max size of 18\"X12\" print to see how it looks with 300dpi. The camera to phone connection does suck. I need to be on a real wifi signal to connect. On the Sony I can connect my phone through bluetooth. If I am underground, on a plane the Sony was no problem. The Canon wont work. Also the Canon app isn't great compared to the Sony. It lags a lot. That's not gonna ruin my experience what so ever. It's not a big deal. I made a few videos from my trip with this camera because I did not want to carry any DSLR with me. This camera does not disappoint. The photos are excellent, it is easy to use, and is really small and light. The pros: - The size! It is a little bigger than pocket size, but fits great in a purse and definitely in cargo short pockets - Focus is quick and accurate (unless your subject is a 4yo that moves faster than a running back) - Picture quality is excellent for the sensor size (or for any camera really) - Battery life is reasonable (and they don't take forever to charge) - The image stabilization saved my bacon a time or two. I also concluded that even though these Athlon Midas’ are listed as the number three tier binocular in Athlon’s lineup (Athlon Cronus is the top tier followed by Athlon Ares) that in every way that really mattered to me (BAK4 roof prisms, phase shift corrected, ED glass) these Athlon Midas’ would provide the same practical performance as the more expensive top tier Athlon Cronus. All of this and finding a pair of Athlon Midas binoculars at the bargain price of $225, along with just a couple of favorable reviews, and noting the lifetime warranty, encouraged me to take the leap. Once in hand the Athlon Midas’ binoculars appear to be very well built and rugged. I checked for common binocular issues, such as collimation, and found no problems. I did some experimenting looking at trees and house roofs down the street from me on a snowy day both at midday and later as dusk set in. I could not detect the presence of any chromatic abberation (which I would expect to show up when there is snow as part of the image). So all good there. I only have a rather cheap pair of binoculars to compare these too, but the difference with the Athlon Midas binoculars is striking. They are very bright and clear. The resolution of the image is very sharp. Color reproduction seems excellent. No evidence of the contrast washing out as happens with cheaper binoculars. All in all these binoculars seem to be a spectacular bargain. Athlon seems to be an up and coming company in the optics world. They make rifle scopes, spotting scopes, and rangefinders in addition to binoculars.
