Has anyone bought these in 2020 and can comment on whether you still get the sticky outer coating issue ?

I bought my Canon 10x30 IS II in 2018 and four full years later the coating still looks and feels like brand new. Fingers crossed for the next few years.

How do they compare with, say, 10x50s for astronomy?

I live in a rainy, light-polluted city in the north of England, so I never get much opportunity to use my Canon 10x30 ISll binoculars to look at the night sky. I bought them because my handshake is quite bad: non-stabilised images dance around madly, but with the Stabilise button pressed, I get an impressively steady image with only slow smooth movements of the visual field, whether deliberate or involuntary. However, their performance falls off perceptibly in twilight conditions, and for viewing dimmer celestial objects such as galaxies and nebulae, you would need all the light you can get. The smaller, 30mm, diameter of the Canon 10x30 ISll's objective lenses will limit their light-gathering power to yield an image only about one third as bright as that you would see with a 10x50 pair. The image produced by the 10x50’s larger diameter objectives would theoretically also be a little sharper too. The image magnification of each would be the same (x10) but, depending on other aspects of the optical design, the field of view in the10x50 pair may also be wider than limitations imposed by the image-stabilised design would permit. In the comparison you suggested, mounting a 10x50 binocular on a really rigid tripod may well give you an image that's as stable as the Canon's internal accelerometers achieve, but at the penalty of introducing other drawbacks such as portability, ease and speed of use and the ability to look in any direction to view the image without the physical contortions involved in aligning your viewing direction with that of the instrument's. The Canon European Warranty sheet that comes in the box with them says "The binoculars are covered for one year from the original purchase date of the new product. can you get a tripod adaptor for it?

No. I am glad I purchased this one. The ultimate version (£1000 +) is significantly heavier.Stabilisation is something that impresses people who borrow it and tripod need is questionable unless you have a specific need.
