Q: Can i use this cable if my 2008 imac screen no longer works, can i hook up this cable & boot up imac and laptop to transfer files ?

If there are the right kind of Firewire ports on both Macs, then the software will support booting in target-disk mode. Look at the shape of the connector ports on both machines: this cable has square connectors. If one or both of your Macs has the connector port with one-side-square, one-side-beveled, you need a different cable.

Q: Canon 1ds. i have an older camera that needs a firewire 9 pin i believe to 6 pins on the laptop, do you know if this will work with a dslr camera?

Don’t know. Mine connects harddrive to computer.

I'm not sure what a "dc interface" is, but IEEE1394 is a 6 pin connector. This is an IEEE1394b a 9 pin connector.

Q: will this plug into the firewire port on a 2011 macbook pro to a sony iLink?

yes one end will plug into the 2011 MACbook Pro and the other end should fix the sony ilink. A few years back I was able to download videos direct onto a macbook running OSX 10.6.
