Q: Can it works for right and left door?

Yes. The handles for interior and exterior can be swapped to accommodate both left and right swinging doors. I have used this lock both ways. You will be satisfied by using a keypad lock and may never again want a lock with a key!

Q: Would this lock be a good choice for an interior door? I want to use it on the basement door so my kids can't go down but my mom can get out.

I think it would be fine inside, it is not too big and you can set it so that she could leave the basement and when it closes behind her it is locked. It is a bit big phyiscally for an interior door (8x5 inches) but it is styled nice and if it is not a particulally visable spot it would be great

Q: How secure is it to just leave the 2 pre-programmed

I'm assuming your question referred to the pre-programmed "codes". I have two of these locks (plus a third warranty replacement) and each lock has totally different codes. I am assuming they are generated randomly, based on the fact that the codes were provided with a stick-on label as opposed to being pre-printed on the product sheet. So, the pre-programmed codes would seem to be as secure as other codes you might store. In the event you need to give someone else an entry code (e.g., neighbor or temporary visitor), I would highly recommend assigning a temporary code so you do not have to give them either of the pre-programmed codes.

Q: My husband always forgets to lock the door. Is this an automatic lock?

Yes, it locks automatically and you never have to worry about locking yourself out because you only have to put in the code. If you do not want to have it lock automatically, you can turn a lever on the inside of the lock which sets it to remain unlocked in the event you might have a party outside and want to go in and out continuously.You will never want a key lock again once you have this lock.
