Is it useful for T5i ?

I have it for my T2i and it has lasted for about 2 years now so if you are able to use it for the T5i I would say get it. I do not think the batteries have changed through the different models. Why is this battery $50 bucks as opposed to the other batteries which are $12?

Very likely because they are either third party batteries (which I do no recommend), or fakes (which can be hard to spot and need to be avoided).  I recommend sticking to Canon for batteries, as they will for sure hold up.  Its not that a third party battery can't also hold up, it's just more likely to prematurely degrade, and then you are replacing it much sooner than the Canon brand (I have had Canon batteries last several years, and third party no longer hold charge after 6 months).  As long as you understand and accept the risk then it is personal choice.  But again, I recommend only Canon brand batteries.

I also recommend to get your batteries from sources other than Amazon or other marketplace type sellers, as they are frequently sent fakes from the third party sellers that send them stock.  Places like BnH, Best Buy, Adorama, Canon direct, all get their stock straight from the source.  If you do get one from Amazon or other marketplace sellers, go to Canon's site and read up on how to spot a fake.  Fakes not only will stop functioning prematurely, they also have other risk like catching fire or damaging your camera.
