This is what clearblue said when I asked: “ It’s part of the internal structure of the test and is normal. As you have a 'not pregnant‘ result, retest in 3 days time if your period does not start.”

Is one line means you are not pregnant and two lines means you are

Yes 1 line not pregnant 2 lines you are . But if one of them 2 lines are very faint then could also mean you are . If testing early I'd use a test that has pink lines like predictor.

Is the outside packaging discreet?

Yes it came in a bubble envelope but it did say home tests on the label

My digital test said positive but with a book symbol on the side what does this mean?

You should do another one just to make sure, maybe is a faulty test, this book symbol never shows in my tests
