I did prime my piece before painting which the directions said was not needed but I had already done it before buying the paint. I originally bought a blue chalk paint from lowes (which they messed up the tint color) and after one coat hated it which is when I found this paint on Amazon. The doors were never painted the blue so the yellow went right on the primer and only needed 2 coats like the directions say. However, the rest of the piece went over the ugly blue and needed 3-4 coats. I still have 1/5 paint left in the pint.
