I am not a beginner but far from an expert wood carver. I purchased this set a few weeks ago & I love it. Right when I opened the box I was very happy with the very nice canvas bag it comes in to keep everything neat & organized. I found the 12 uniquely different chisels perfect for cuts & gauges that I was never able to do before so easily. I am now able to detail like never before. I was able to sharpen them, without issue, I did so for practice & because of the comments left in a previous review, I didn't think they needed to much sharpening. You may need to acquire other tools for real hard woods,I do not use, but for softer more common woods this set does the job. Highly recommended.

This is a great set to get started with hobby carving. They're inexpensive, are easy to hold & manipulate, and seem very sturdy so far. Pros will need & want better, bit for a basic beginner this will get you going! Wanted to point out that they come unsharpened. I've seen other reviewers ding the product for this, but carvers need to learn how to sharpen anyways, so I don't see that as a flaw at all.

These tools are an attractive set, but unfortunately require additional sharpening and polishing before they are ready for use. The set I received still had all the tuning and grinding marks in the cutting surfaces, and the only way I could make a cut was to be more forceful with the mallet. To be fair, once I sharpened and polished one of the straight gouges, I was then able to execute the cuts that I would expect to be able to do with a new set. If these tools had arrived properly sharpened as one would expect for new tools, they would definitely warrant a higher rating.

I was looking for something easy to use, and comfortable. After reading reviews about quality and value, I went with this product. I choose free shipping, and had them in 3 days! 5 stars for that! The box was pretty heavy (figure if it’s packaged with quality and care, it’s built the same way). I was not disappointed. Nice little roll up pouch to keep them in. They were sharp and felt good, and were likewise easy to use. I’m no professional, but these will help shape my craft, as I shape my next masterpiece! I would recommend these!

This set is just what I needed to get started on my bread board tray project! There is a great variety of carving tools to choose from. The storage case keeps everything nice and organized just how I like it and the quality of the roll up canvas case was a nice surprise.

The gouges are fine, the steel looks of acceptable quality, the cuffs of the gouges are poorly painted with excess varnish on the wood, they do not feel like professional work tools as expected for being a product "chosen by Amazon and by the description given by the seller I thought that this kit came different measures, but they sent me several repetitions without any logical explanation for me, the gouge that I was waiting so very bad, did not come, I do not feel well, I feel I was waiting for something else "varied".

Not marked as to what size they are. NOT SHARP!!! The edges are so bad, right out of the box, and you can't sharpen them. The metal is SO inferior it won't take a good edge. A total and complete waste of my money!

Going to be a lot of work to get then sharp enough to use. If you do not have the tools or the experience sharping chisels these are not for you. The bevels are mostly good, but they are a long way from sharp and not usable right out of the box. Not for the beginner. The stone provided max grit is 350. You'd need at least 1200 to get a halfway decent edge and 4000 to 8000 for carving chisels.
