This series is designed to help children practice and master a variety of skills, including beginning math, penmanship, reading comprehension, and much more. These books can be used to enrich learning, reinforce skills, and provide extra practice. The compact size (7" x 9") allows the books to fit easily in childrens hands and backpacks. Review: Lo recomiendo - Espectacular para mi hija Review: Worth getting - Definitely worth buying. The reading passages starts fairly easy with 4 - 5 sentences. Then it progresses to a one page passage with lots of depth and vocabulary. I truly recommend it.

2nd Grade level comprehension practice
Not really first grade. Stories are more difficult than first grade level. More like second. BUT the great thing is that they are informational text which is hard to find in primary materials. Story on left side and questions on the right side which is how many high stakes tests are set up in second grade. Just put a sticker over the number 1 on the first page and you can use this book with any child who struggles with comprehension and text evidence. Small size book, so easy to story. All material is black and white. VERY REASONABLE cost too!

Great book for special needs kids who struggle with reading comprehension at a great price!
I got this book to assist my autistic son with his reading comprehension. My son is severely behind and reading comprehension has been one thing he has not mastered. This book is perfect for not only 1st graders but any parents with special needs kids or struggling reading. I highly recommend this book. It takes you thru story sequencing, answering the who, what, when, where questions. The book is really a great value as I have looked around and any thing that is geared for special needs are struggling readers tends to be pricey.

Great for introducing reading comprehension concepts
This is a good workbook for beginning readers--it starts with extremely simple stories (a couple of sentences and questions with pictures) and works up to increasingly complex material. It was great for my daughter in that she gained confidence quickly with the easy passages, and ramped up to the tougher material painlessly. The sticker system in the this book (as with the other books in the Teacher Created Resource materials) is motivating; each page gets a sticker on completion, and there's a sticker to put on a path from start to finish for each page, as well. It never ceases to amaze me that stickers work as a reward mechanism, but who am I to complain? Wait, wait--I will complain about two things: by over-simplifying the material, errors and ambiguity in the non-fiction sections can cause confusion, meaning I end up having to clarify. Also, some questions are poorly worded...which also means I end up having to clarify.

Not great
I take exception to this "Teacher created resource." It starts out with a few very simple pages, continues to longer passages with multiple choice questions & finishes with much more difficult passages. All of that is fine, but I suggest reading the questions before having the child try to answer them. Some passages are better than others . In 'The Don't Play with Fire' as an example, one question asks, "the word alarm means" a) a noise that warns b) the sound of a horn But the passage only says, " Have a smoke alarm in your home. If you hear it get out!" It would be much clearer to a 6 or 7 year old to have it explained. "Have a smoke alarm in your house. The noise made by a smoke ALARM is to WARN you to get out." In the passage "Air" "Even fish breathe air. Their gills take air out of the water." That is incorrect information. Fish take oxygen out of the water, not air. I'll still use this & the 2nd grade one as well, but will modify it.

Great book to keep up skills over the summer!
Great book to keep up skills over the summer! Comes with stickers that can be added to a little game board, so as assignments are completed it gets them that much closer to winning the game. Makes it more fun then just assignments. She also enjoys the assignments, they have pictures to go with the reading and pictures with some of the questions. They are coloring book style pictures so when the assignments done she can color in the pictures. Great buy for the price!

An ESL Must-Have!
I teach middle school English as a Second Language, and this is has been SUCH an amazing resource. It really forces the reader to check back in the short, simple story to find the answer to a question. This is an excellent warm-up activity because it enables comprehension without causing frustration due to materials being too challenging. Unlike other products, this is not too "baby-themed" either, and actually contains interesting stories. All around great product!
