Lacks the Tone of the Originals, but Well-Made
Following disappointing box office receipts, Sony’s plans for a sequel to “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” stalled out. After sufficient delay, the studio decided to skip their remakes of the second and third of Steig Larsson’s “Millennium Trilogy” – “The Girl Who Played with Fire” and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest” – instead adapting David Lagercrantz’s commissioned fourth novel, “The Girl in the Spider’s Web.” Director Fede Alvarez recast the roles, with Claire Foy portraying Lisbeth Salander, Sverrir Gudnason playing Mikael Blomkvist, Cameron Britton as Plague, and Vicky Krieps as Erika Berger. Like the previous film from 2009, the choice of Gudnason as Blomkvist is a departure from the novels as he’s too young and handsome. Foy’s portrayal of Salander is good, though Lagercrantz’s version of the character is much more subdued than Larsson’s original character. The story follows Lagercrantz’s sequel fairly accurately, with the film delving further into Lisbeth Salander's past. While the second and third volumes of the “Millennium Trilogy” explored her troubled past and her father, Lagercrantz and filmmaker Alvarez sets Salander against another family member: her estranged sister, Camilla (played by Sylvia Hoeks). Larsson never wrote much about Lisbeth’s sister, but always hinted that she lived a normal life; Lagercrantz casts her as a Machiavellian criminal obsessed with destroying Lisbeth. The film references the events surrounding Lisbeth’s father, thought it appears unlikely that Sony will go back and adapt Larsson’s “The Girl Who Played with Fire” and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.” The inciting events are rather radically changed from the book and the story itself somewhat pared-down for film. In the novel, Lagercrantz wrote well-paced suspenseful sequences that Alvarez ably translated to film, but the basic plot feels too much like a rehash of previous events and the story never reaches the compelling fervor of Larsson. Perhaps it's unfair to compare this film with the previous one, but as a continuation of an earlier body of work, filmgoers will find it nearly impossible not to draw comparisons. Those looking for a well-structured crime story will be pleased, but fans of the original “Millennium Trilogy” will likely be disappointed. Too much time has passed since the initial phenomenon of Larsson’s books and the first film adaptations and, as this film failed to make back its budget, it seems unlikely that Sony will adapt Lagercrantz’s other additions to the “Millennium” series.

An Excellent Follow On Movie to the Series
I am a BIG fan of Lisbeth Salander, and love both the Swedish versions and the more recent American versions. I think the American version, this one ,is better than the Swedish version because of the many ways Lisbeth is presented, while in he Swedish version she basically looks the same throughout the movie. I do love Rooney Mara as Lisbeth! She did an excellent job of portraying her, so was sorry she was not also in this one. However, I still think Claire Foy was superb! Must admit that the themes are really disturbing, but love the character of Lisbeth.

EXCELLENT Actress.
Claire Foy is a PHENOMENAL actress. As I watched this movie I realized where I had seen her face before. She is the lead actress in the series "The Crown"!!! She "owned" the part in The Girl in the Spiders Web. I was transfixed. The movie delves into depths that are quite painful to watch. It is these glimpses into Lisbeth Salander's past that weave together to shed understanding into how Lisbeth was obliged to survive at odds that would've done most "in" at least 12 times over. Claire Foy brought Lisbeth to "life" poignantly and powerfully. This movie is a "keeper".

Deviation
Stieg Larsson created a great storyline with his 3 books, this isn’t a SL book rather it’s story using the characters. Decent action film, departs from the original storyline and the characters change (Lisbeth turns into a physical action super heroine). The 3 Swedish films are still the best.
