Also, the diameter is 5/8". **Q: do you have to buy wheels separate or does it come with two** A: It comes complete with the 2 wheels and ready to use after attaching the shield and supports to the body. Easy project. I am very pleased with the grinder. **Q: Can I use this for polishing brass?** A: I think yes. I use the fabric wheel for polishing the surface of carving chisels. **Q: Can the guards be removed to allow for polishing larger items?** A: I removed all my guards for soft cloth polishing and buffing. However, if you use the grinder wheels made of stone, you should absolutely keep the guards on, including the spark arrestor thingie in front. Sometimes, these stone wheels may shatter and flying rocks will hit you... unless those guards are in place. I used my buffing wheels without guards with no problem. You cannot polish with guards on. The weight (mass) helps to keep vibration down while in operation. This little jewel weighs in at a hair under 30 lbs. and it runs like a sewing machine. It is a well thought out tool that is manufactured to high quality standards. It comes with a diamond wheel dressing tool to true up the wheels as needed. They even provide a clip on the backside of the machine to store the tool. There is also a water cup on the front to cool your work piece. A single speed version of this grinder is available, but I recommend to spend the little extra money and get the variable speed version. You'll be glad you did.
