The PetPace collar calculates respiration based on a physiological phenomenon called sinus arrhythmia. Sinus arrhythmia, the cyclic modulation of pulse rates, is a normal event that usually occurs when a cat's pulse is below 100 beats per minute, most often at rest while relaxed in the home setting.
It is very difficult to see distinct sinus arrhythmia at higher pulse rates. The PetPace collar can measure respiration in most cats, especially when at home and relaxed. Some cats, especially if they have advanced heart disease, may not frequently have rates below 100 or sinus arrhythmia, and therefore may not have respiratory rate measured by PetPace all the time.
In those cases, we recommend that owners will continue monitoring resting respiratory rates manually. At the same time, the PetPace collar can still be very valuable in the management of cats with chronic heart disease, because it provides wealths of important additional information, like pulse rate, Heart Rate Variability, activity, analytics of trends and averages, and more.
