Academy Award® nominee Viggo Mortensen and Academy Award® winner Mahershala Ali star in Green Book, a film inspired by a true friendship that transcended race, class, and the 1962 Mason-Dixon line. When Tony Lip (Mortensen), a bouncer from an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx, is hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley (Ali), a world-class Black pianist, on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South, they must rely on "The Green Book" to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for African-Americans. Confronted with racism, danger as well as unexpected humanity and humor—they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive on the journey of a lifetime.Bonus Content:Virtuoso PerformancesAn Unforgettable FriendshipGoing Beyond the Green Book Review: A Great Film - The Green Book records a sad chapter in America, racism in the 1960s. The film title comes from a real book that was used especially by Black citizens to determine which cities in the Deep South were safe for African-Americans to be out in public after sundown. It also listed hotels and restaurants that served Black Americans. The story or plot line of the movie is based on real events. Dr. Don Shirley, a pianist of genius formed a jazz trio and went on tour into the South in the early 1960s. He traveled alone in his Cadillac with his only company being his white Italian-American chauffeur, Tony Lap. The tour takes place in the eight weeks prior to Christmas Eve. People often compare the film (or rather contrast it) with Driving Miss Daisy. But, that is a mistake. Viewed from that comparison the movie is considered by some film critics and movie makers such as Spike Lee as being racist. The Green Book did win the Oscar for Best Picture and Mahshala Ali won a much-deserved Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Dr. Don Shirley. Viggo Mortensen was nominated for Best Actor, but did not win. My first viewing was like reading a mystery novel. I wanted to focus on Ali and his story. I came away from that screening with the feeling that the movie could indeed be considered racist. It is the product of wealthy and powerful white writers, director, and producers. It is, after all, the story of a Black musical genius during a dangerous tour through Jim Crow America. However, on second and third viewings, I began to realize that movie is about the total transformation of the Italian-American Bronx tough guy, Tony Lap, from a racist New Yorker into a very decent man. The movie is really more about the chauffeur than his famous passenger. The performances are outstanding and the musical score is magnificent. I still think it would be interesting to see a second movie of from the same material, but a version written, produced, and directed (e.g., Spike Lee) by Black artists. Given the expense of film creation, that scenario is highly unlikely. Enjoy Driving Miss Daisy with Jessica Tandy and Morgan friends, just do not confused it with the real-life story of one of America's greatest mid-20th century musical artists. Advice. The Green Book is a movie that must be seen at least twice. Incidentally, a pleasant surprise is the genuine humor in the film such as the subject of whether or not Tony carries a gun. There is also the tender side story of the letters that Tony writes to his wife in his absence at a family time of the year. This movie would make a great discussion point for movie versions of book clubs. Ideally, such a screening should be shown to an audience of both whites and Blacks. It should definitely been seen and discussed. The real Green Book was a horrible book that confirmed and perhaps even glorified racism, but the movie is all about social redemption and it is beautifully filmed. Review: Definitely want to watch this movie - This movie was recommended to us by our son, and it was a great recommendation. The movie is based on a true story. Funny and heart warming at the same time.

Worth the watch several times
Excellent movie! They could've done less with the foul language, but that's Hollywood for ya. I would not recommend watching with little ones around. Like I said, in the beginning it has some pretty bad language (in my opinion), but there are a couple of scenes that are pretty sensitive and would need some parental explanations. Overall, it's a keeper! I have watched it several times. I think Viggo Mortensen should have won the BEST Supporting Actor Oscar. All of the cast are great!

Oscar Nominee - worth it --sort of a Driving Miss Daisy type film.
Quick Story Recap: Tony, played by Viggo Mortensen, is a simple man from the Bronx. He works as a grunt and bouncer at the Copacabana nightclub and has a reputation for being able to handle any trouble. The club closes for renovation and Tony is looking for money anywhere he can find it, including food eating contests. Dr. Shirley, played by Mahershala Ali, is a concert pianist who is planning a tour to the deep racist south and needs to find a driver and a body guard of sorts, he hires Tony. The film follows their trip from beginning to finish. Acting wise, I loved every second of both main actors. Viggo's Tony was a lovable simple goon who becomes more aware of the world as he experiences it with Dr. Shirley. Every action, facial expression, and his accent seemed spot on every second he got on screen. He wasn't just a committed character which most actors get lauded for - He was a committed character who was real, believable, and lovable. Likewise, Mahershala's Dr. Don Shirley was amazing too. The film is enhanced by their personality push and pull. Mahershaia was able to flesh out his character and use his time on screen both with and without Viggo to convey on powerful moments - as he so often does in his films. A moment that really sticks out as amazing to me was the dialogue where they discuss blackness, and it gets real. They delivered it so well, the truth hits both Tony and the audience and it is magical how you feel it with him. Well done acting team, script team, directors, and editors for how it feels and looks. Overall film wise, I loved it. I watched because it was a nominee. I knew nothing of this film or the story it was based upon coming in so it took a short second to get acclimated to the story and where it was going. But it does have some great moments and the dialogue (and film as well) moves from funny to deep and back again in a perfect way to not go too deep in either direction even as the undertone for the very difficult scenarios they go through together are very serious and upsetting -Jim Crow south. The film kind of makes me think of a reverse Driving Miss Daisy. As I mentioned earlier, I loved Tony and Dr. Shirley. I was glad Tony has a reformation of his own. It made the movie have a great ending. I think I might add this to the home collection.

Pretty Good
Nice story and good acting. It had a bit of an abrupt end that didn't answer a few things, but otherwise, I enjoyed it. Fun to see Viggo Mortensen in something again.
