Hi, Yes they work both ways....by pushing the button on the top or just push along as you would a normal toy car. My little nephew enjoys playing with them both ways. He struggles to push down the button sometimes so he just pushes them along himself :-)

Will these cars go on carpet?

Yes, they are the best cars I’ve ever bought. My 16 month old granddaughter loves them. First class toy. Don’t hesitate.

I know it says on the description they are suitable for 1 year old but are they actually? Worried about purchasing and them being unsuitable

I am not sure about the direction of your question - whether these are too advanced or too babyish? We bought these for a child of nearly 1. Did they push the cars down and move them? No. But they really enjoyed adults sending the cars on journeys and 'progressing' after them! They still, like them. The toys seems of good quality and the kind of thing that children enjoy I think for a few years..having races or just watching them career across the kitchen or hall floor! If you are looking for a gift for a child under 1 then I must say we were surprised by the Tomy Hide and Squeak 'plastic eggs' which come in 4 colours with shape sorters on the bottom. We don't know what the appeal is but we have yet to see a young child that doesn't like them! Our other 'success' was the Nuby watering can.. it seems to have been enjoyed endlessly at bath-time and now the child 'helps' with gardening and watering of plants! But the cars are good fun for little children!
