NETGEAR GS108PEv3 8-Port Gigabit PoE+ Managed Switch – Long-Term Real-World Review (9 Years of Use)
I purchased this switch in 2016 and it’s still running perfectly in 2025 — over 9 years of continuous 24/7 operation with zero issues. **Primary use:** Powering and connecting 3–5 PoE security cameras at my home (typically 4 cameras at a time over the years). The switch’s 4 PoE/PoE+ ports provide up to 53W total budget, which has been more than enough for my setup (standard 802.3af cameras, usually 7-12W each). **What I actually use:** - Only the basic switching and PoE functions — I’ve never needed the “Plus” managed features (VLANs, QoS, etc.) until recently. - It just sits on a shelf and works silently with no fan noise. **Reliability notes:** - Survived multiple power outages, surges (I do have it on a UPS). - No port failures, no rebooting needed, no dropped cameras. - Even when I switch ISPs the wired PoE cameras usually just take a reset (ReoLink) to get back on the network for app access (the cameras are still writing to SD card tho) I can’t provide technical benchmarks or power-draw measurements, but in everyday home use with PoE cameras it has been 100% reliable. The fact that a ~9-year-old unit is still performing like new makes it excellent value for anyone setting up a small PoE camera or IoT system and wants something that will last. If you need a simple, rock-solid PoE switch for a few cameras or access points and don’t want to replace it every couple of years, this GS108PEv3 is still a very safe buy. Highly recommended for that use case.

Great POE switch for a home lab
I was looking for an affordable POE switch to add to my home lab. I wasn’t going to be doing anything too fancy with it, but I did want the capability to remote into the switch and do some basic administrator of it, but nothing at the level of Cisco IOS. I already had an unmanaged Netgear switch in the lab, so I opted to stay with the brand I already knew and trusted, and look for model that offered POE capability. After looking at what was available, I went with the GS108PEv3, and purchased an Open-Box one from Amazon warehouse. Going this route, I save $15 on the switch and still had the guaranteed that is something was wrong with it, Amazon would refund me the cost. Luckily, I didn’t need to use this service, switch came well wrapped from the warehouse, with no obvious scratches or marks on it. Switch booted up right away and I immediately went through the paces of configuring it. First thing first, firmware update check. One was available and I immediately upgraded it. Came up right after the upgrade, so no chip problem there. Even though this is categorized as a managed switch, the actual settings are pretty basic, and easily understood. Next came the actual reason for this, powering up a couple POR devices I had laying about. Again, plugged them in, and everything came up as expected. Tested all the ports on the switch, and everything was communicating as expected. I will not be testing any network intensive products, so I do not expect this device to have any issues with the traffic I will be generating. Overall, I’m happy with my new additional my home lab. It adds the POE functionality that I wanted, and with breaking bank.

A review for the professional network engineer
This is a review for the NETGEAR 8-Port PoE Gigabit Ethernet Plus Switch (GS108PEv3). I paid $99.99 in August 2022. I'm a systems engineer for a large network vendor that competes with the one on Tasman Drive, thus I have high expectations from a switch that claims it's managed, and supports vlans. I bought it because my company's employee purchase program is suspended due to supply-chain issues. That said, I do not regret this purchase. The switch supports 48v PoE on 4 ports, VLANs on all 8 (1-4094), trunk and access ports, .1p, IGMP snooping, and even rate limiting. Pretty impressive for a $100 switch. Configuration is fairly easy, but there is one small caveat. My home network runs on vlan 4000, and my router is on a tagged port. The switch's management interface will not work on a tagged vlan, thus I had to set vlan 4000 as the native vlan on the port to my router, otherwise it became unmanageable. It was an easy fix, but I'm writing this anyway as this may save someone a bit of time. Overall throughput is good, it can easily handle ~300Mbit/s. All in all, a good buy if you know what you're buying.

Excellent switch with one caveat-difficult to setup
This is an excellent switch. It's fast, small, attractive, and has a great set of features. That's especially true for the price. It has PoE. It has 802.1Q VLANs. It looks and feels nice. The web interface is exceedingly simple to understand and use. There is only one gripe with the GS108PE: the abomination that is the NETGEAR Switch Discovery Tool (NSDT). It finds nothing. It doesn't work. It is really a combination with a sort of weird DHCP implementation on the switch's management software itself. Between the two of them, it will look like your switch is not working correctly. This is even worse if it appears to work intermittently. If your switch does not get a DHCP address immediately upon boot, it sets itself to a static IP address and doesn't retry. You need to connect to the switch over ethernet and manually set a static IP on your computer to access the switch. The NETGEAR Switch Discovery Tool (NSDT), made by the manufacturer and completely aware of this behavior could do this for you. It sounds like that's what it would do given it's name. No, it just does a simple NMAP of your network and looks for any switches. What a piece of junk. Once you get past that hurdle, though, this switch is great.

Great product for the price
Using to power outdoor security cameras. Has been working without issue for some time now. Have never had to power-cycle it and it has survived many power cuts.

Wasn't a NETGEAR fanboy until this
I really love this little switch. I have a server, mac mini, and some lab equipment I wanted a gig connection for. This thing was a breeze to setup and had POE, so I could run some phones. The switch itself takes a management address from your existing home network, and doesn't enable VLANs by default. The setup is very simple, all gui based, and has enough features Pros: Really easy to reset, if you ever lock yourself out of it. PROSAFE+ utility is really neat, but requires you to plug directly into it. VLAN Management is great. QOS settings are kind of pointless, but you can rate limit specific ports which is really nice (eg: throttling an access point for the kids or guest VLAN) Cons: Not really something you can leave out, if you were going to use this for a business. Anyone with enough working knowledge of NETGEAR products could probably hack this in minutes if it was unsecured. It does not appear to support MAC address sticky, even if you lock down the other ports.

Another solid NetGear switch - and the POE works for me
I've had many NetGear switches and hubs through the years and they have always served me well. When my ten year old 16 port NetGear switch failed and its ports started "flapping" I replaced it with two NetGear 8 port gigabit switches - one of them (this one) with POE support. My NetGear switches and other network equipment is in my utility room in my basement, and I have a CAT5e network line that runs up to the kitchen where my Ubiquiti WAP sits out of site on a kitchen cabinet. This NetGear happily provides sufficient POE so that I no longer need a power cord for the Ubiquiti running down the side of the cabinet.

Small simple managed switch
This switch just works. If you wanted to extend your network b/c you ran out of jacks on your router. This does the trick and works unmanaged for the most part. But if you need some specific steering of devices on your network, this switch can do that with vlan tagging. I was able to put in between my POE cameras and NVR so I could play with some A.I. projects. I didn't like having to install third party software to configure the switch. No issues yet on that front. Simply going to the IP and trying to configure the switch wasn't as good as the third party app they want you to use. Not to mention, the software product is at end of life. Other than that, the switch is working as intended.
