Simon & Schuster's Guide to Mushrooms is indispensable to anyone fascinated by mushrooms and other fungi. Lavishly illustrated, it contains detailed information about 420 types of mushrooms and other fungi found in the United States and Europe. The comprehensive introduction provides general information on the structure, reproduction, life cycles, classification, and distribution of the various species and describes the individual parts of the fungus as well. The entries describe the appearance, habitat, and geographic distribution of each species of fungi. The easy-to-use visual key provides each entry with immediately recognizable symbols that indicate spore color, ecological environment, and whether the species is edible or poisonous. A glossary and analytical index, plus an Index to Genera for locating particular subjects, help make this the most beautiful, valuable, and authoritative book in the field. Review: Great guidebook if you're interested in mushrooms - It's a thick and small size guidebook. Very convenient to hold in your hands. The only thing I was surprised is that the cover of the book was different from what is showing on the website. The pictures are in color and provide descriptive information about so many mushrooms. I got it for my 6 year old son. He went through every page many times and every day. He absolutely loves it! The book is in very good condition. The delivery took 11 days. The price is very affordable. Review: EXCELLENT VISUALS! - The best book for visuals of mushrooms!!!

The best introduction to amateur mycology
I have given this book to several new converts to mushrooms. No other has such a good introduction to every aspect.

A More Advanced Guide
A good addition to your library of nature guides, but probably not the best for the newby. Extremely technical. Lots of detail. Pretty comprehensive. There are 400 full-color illustrations, which is nice, but the photography isn't great--not great resolution; the photos appear to be something from the 60's or 70's, not the current digital photos. The index contains no common names, so if you're trying to see what a Chicken of the Woods looks like, for instance, good luck finding it. Not all entries even include common names in the descriptions. Beginners might never find something.
