Reliable
The Stanley vacuum food jar works great. I bought it as a Christmas present for my husband, and he's had no problems with it. It doesn't leak and kept soup so hot that he had to let it cool before he could eat it hours later. Plus the red looks great. I'm not sure what else I could ask of a thermos.

Works well but wish opening were just a little wider
This thermos works as it should. In fact, I'm sitting at my desk right now eating from it.I don't understand why some reviewers had bad luck with their Stanley Vacuum Food Jars--maybe they received defective ones? I carry homemade soup or stew to work every day in the Stanley jar, and it keeps the food piping hot for at least four hours, sometimes even when inadvertently left in the car in 25-degree F weather. By piping hot I mean I have to blow on the soup in order to cool it enough to put it in my mouth. And I do not heat the jar ahead of time with boiling water--not at all necessary (I tried it--makes no difference in the ability of the thermos to keep my food virtually as hot as when I pour it from the pan into the thermos, although I suppose it could make a difference if wanting to keep food hot for 8 hrs or so). Not only that, for extra nutrients I often break a raw egg into the bottom of the jar before pouring in the simmering soup and capping the jar: the egg cooks gently but completely, and I mean firm, not poached or soft-boiled.So why four stars and not five? I cannot use my RSVP Endurance stainless steel wide-mouth canning funnel to fill the thermos, which is quite disappointing. The thermos mouth seems to be exactly the same size as the funnel opening. If only it were just a few millimeters wider! Would make it easier to fill, to eat from, and to wash (I use an Oxo Bottle Brush, as my hand will not fit inside it). I've been spooning my soup/stew into the jar, which is slow and messy. And frustrating. So finally I broke down and ordered an RSVP Endurance stainless steel canning funnel from amazon, which is for regular-mouth canning jars (I had to read the reviews to confirm this). It arrived yesterday and I used this morning. It works. But I kind of wish I hadn't had to buy a second funnel just for my thermos. On the other hand, I use it just about every day, so ultimately it should be worth it in time saved and messes avoided. In fact, if you're purchasing this vacuum food jar for the first time and you don't have a regular-mouth canning jar funnel in a kitchen drawer, you might as well order one now and save yourself the frustration later!

WAS a very good thermos it exceeded my expectations at first. Stopped holding heat after about 4 months. Was never dropped or banged around always transported in a soft lunch box and hand washed.

Three Stars
I thought it was bigger. Too small for two people.

HANDS DOWN, the best on the market!
HANDS DOWN THE BEST FOOD THERMOS I HAVE EVER BOUGHT! Insulated food containers are expensive, and I have bought too many trying to find one that will keep my Sons lunches hot by lunchtime (no luck 'till now!)Pros- keeps food hot for HOURS, no spills and holds a whole can of soup!Cons- not cheap(but worth it!) and I haven't dropped it or tested it's durability. I believe Stanley has a reputation for sturdiness:) thanks for reading!

Just what we needed
Another great buy from Amazon...we added these 17oz food jars to our home after we bought the 20oz food jars.A little smaller than the 20oz and you have more room in your bag without the handle but both are great depending on your needs. Holds a whole can of soup or spaghettios which is very important if you have kids. My sons love it now that their food stays hot. I bought two of these and am very pleased with them. The color is cool too.

Does the job
I use this mostly for cold food (smoothies) so I can't say much about it's heat retention. I did use it once for home-made soup, though, and it retained the heat fine until lunch. The thermos opening is smaller than I'd like, but for those who don't like eating or drinking out of the smallish opening or, for that matter, out of stainless steel, the cap is a very roomy and insulated bowl, with a taste-free interior.I wish someone would make one of these things that is just for large servings of soup or stew, which is what I eat on the Volumetrics diet. It would be about twice as wide and half as tall, and the bottom would be more like the top. Just my crazy idea...

Five Stars
A little bigger than Thermos brand 17 ounce but still fit in children box lunch and keep hot longer!
