An elegant 1 step solution to the new digital only macbooks!
Have a newer mac that you want to use with old monitors and projectors? Buy this! I work as a VJ, and this has been a great 1 step solution to my particular problem! I recently purchased a refurbished MacBook Pro (may 2011 model, trust me buy refurbished and save more than even educational pricing!) and had discovered that apple does not support any analog signals through the new thunderbolt/miniDisplayport. Doing some research i discovered that the only would be solution would be to use a mini displayport to vga apple adapter, connected to a scan converter box to output to rca or svideo! This would mean i would need 2 separate devices, and an extra power supply for the converter. After a few days of reading old posts on various forums, I discovered this Item on Amazon 9and a couple no name places as well, that was smaller than a couple of adapters chained together, and would cost less than the adapter and converter combined! To be honest I was a little skeptical, but I was a little desperate to use my new MacBook Pro during live performances so I figured if it didn't work, oh well i could return it. And it works GREAT! the unit itself is a fish shaped device with a usb (for power) a stereo plug (for sound) and a miniDisplayport dongle (for video). The other end has RCA (Yellow, Red, White) female ports, and a female S video Port. Plugging it in had no issues and my mac detected it right away! A blue light (at least on mine) comes on to show signal is coming through. Quality was very good (for an analog device) and I would highly recommend this to anyone that has a newer mac that still uses svideo or rca display devices. Even though i plan on using all hdmi in the future, this is a vital device when I need to work with older equipment (or whatever happens to be at the venue when i set up!!!) Only con is that it takes up a usb port, but is worth it to not have an extra power supply plugged in. Now let's just see how long it lasts! i say that because it is a fairly light device. The cords coming out of it weigh more than the device itself. and running it with a fair amount of video data (the new resolume 4 arena beta!) it did not get very warm after 20 minutes. It feels as if there is very little on the inside of the device, which leaves me just a tiny bit worried but for 60 (the price i paid) still beats the alternatives. Thanks very much!

Great product for MacBook Pro with one caution
This product works very well and comes with a set of a/v cables (the red, yellow, and white cables) as well as an S-video cable. I plugged it into my MacBook Pro and it worked great. Unfortunately I then made a mistake that cost me a lot of grief, a little bit of time, and (fortunately) no money. I switched from extended desktop view to display mirroring in my display settings to try and get what was on my laptop to show up on the TV exactly as it was. Big mistake. That somehow messed with the device and whenever it was plugged into my computer the laptop screen would stay blue and not show my desktop. Since I could not undo the setting without the device plugged in I wasn't able to connect my computer to the TV at all. I found I could toggle the display mirroring setting with 'command-F1' and that solved the problem. Now the device is functioning flawlessly although I do have to be in extended desktop mode. Just be careful not to change any settings once you have plugged the product into your computer. Overall a solid and recommended product.

Works great with Macbook pro , Serato Video SL solution
I DJ in a nightclub and in the process of converting to a video focused play set I recently purchased a new non retina macbook pro . My residency is at a venue that most of the video components are connected via S- video. I needed a output solution to run from the mini displayport of my macbook pro and connect to the s video inputs of this system. This dongle did the trick. I have had no issues running it for the last 3 months and it is plug and play. It does run a little warm and draws power from a usb port (I have mine connected to a usb hub). The screen will flash blue when its plugged in to the mac then revert back to the normal set up after a second or two. The videos from Serato display on the monitors and projectors just fine. It should be noted most of the content I play is standard def, so I cannot say how it looks or performs with hi def content.

The only one I could find
A little big, sucks power down, runs hot. But other than that, it gets the job done solid. Lets you pick resolutions up to 1920 x 1080 on MacBook air... you might ask why but still its nice.

returned. poor clarity.
hdmi people. get with the program. seriously, this technology is outdated. it works great if your gear is decade challenged.

Works great!
Pretty awesome little unit for a portable video setup. It's compact and lightweight, provides both composite and S-video outputs and runs off USB bus power. I have a mid-2011 Mac Mini that I use with this (using the thunderbolt connector) and it works without much fuss. I've had a couple issues while adjusting display resolution (losing display after choosing a somewhat incompatible resolution). But I think this is more an effect of trying to force a square peg (high resolution digital video display) into a round hole (low resolution S-video/composite analog video), so I can't really fault this device. Once your resolution is set, it seems pretty solid. Overall, I think it's a good unit and definitely recommend it.

A great solution for the MacBook Pro
Since I traded in my old MacBook Pro for the newer model with the crappy little video connector, I had not been able to output composite video. This connector does all that I used to be able to do. Sure the video quality is not digital sharp, but it's the same quality that the old HMDI connector delivered through composite. There's also something to be said for the audio routing through the same device. All in all it does what it says very well, and duplicates the functionality lost when Apple pulled the analog signal from the current MBP connector.
