Description Misoprostol is a prescription oral tablet used to help treat stomach ulcers, especially those due to the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs including aspirin and certain prescription arthritis medications. It works by decreasing the formation of stomach acid. Veterinarians may use this in the treatment of animals. Customers may receive this drug under the name Cytotec. Uses Misoprostol may be useful as primary or adjunctive therapy in treating or preventing GI adverse effects (anorexia, vomiting) or gastro-duodenal ulceration, especially when caused or aggravated by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Possible Side Effects The most prevalent adverse effect seen with misoprostol is gastrointestinal distress, usually manifested by diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and flatulence. Adverse effects are often transient and resolve over several days or may be minimized by dosage adjustment or giving doses with food. Potentially, uterine contractions and vaginal bleeding could occur in females. Misoprostol should not be used in pregnant animals, due to the potential for causing abortion. Give with food.
