OK so here is my updated and expanded product review of the Kohler Silent Fill GP1138930 valve. BACKGROUND: I've purchased several of these valves, all for the same installation with the same basic service load for now 20 plus years (for real - Kohler OEM installed in two rooms in 2004. We have lived in this home for 30 years) VALVE LIFE BOTTOM LINE: These replacement valves are good for between 5-6 years when using municipal water pressures of about 100PSI. (That's on the high end, but that's what we have had for thirty years, documented) The failure point will be the rubber seat gasket in the head of the valve, combined with slight deformation of the valve's plastic housing assembly. The gasket will deform and harden, the plastic will stretch, and the end result will be a slow leak into the toilet bowl at all times. (It "sounds/looks like water is running after the tank fills") Plan for it. 5-6 years for this crop of Genuine Kohler Part. QUALITY COMPARED TO FACTORY OEM PART: My Kohler factory installed valve (that came with the Kohler toilets new that we installed in 2004) lasted a bit over 12 years on both Kohler toilets. These Kohler branded replacements in the same toilets under the same pressure and usage rate have twice failed, both at around five years. So, in my experience the OEM valves prove to be better units - even than these "Kohler" branded replacements. I noted at replacement that these aftermarket Kohler brands looked CLOSE but not IDENTICAL to the OEM units. I can't get anyone at Kohler to give me a straight answer on that, but I assume these branded replacement valves are being made under contract specification by an outside vendor, (i.e. "lowest competitive bit" from China, for example?) and the specifications/QC must be just slightly not as demanding as the OEM parts Kohler is putting in their toilets at the Kohler plant. That's an educated guess, backed by a small but accurately monitored sample set. Anyway, these are proving to be not as good as Kohler OEM, but still decent "market average" valves. INSTALLATION: Is straightforward if you have ever done one. Monkey see, monkey do, so I will offer only the not-so-obvious tips. A.) Biggest tip is obvious. Plan to replace your supply line when you do this job. Supply line gaskets harden up too, and you are more likely than not to have a leak if you reuse your 5+ year old supply line. Just replace it while you are there. Save yourself a headache later. B.) Note that the "Complete Installation Instructions" the marketing wonks brag about right on the box are in fact not complete. EXAMPLE: The unit supplies a group of color coded restrictor orifices to restrict the bowl fill speed (Bowl fill is accomplished via the little plastic hose that sticks in the riser pipe and clips on with the spring steel clip, which WILL rust, by the way because Kohler Genuine parts don't use stainless steel here because it costs more). The restrictors are a great idea, which can save water depending on how you regulate your speed of fill. Most unregulated bowl fills waste considerable amounts of water with each flush, AND slow down the time to fill. If you install these restrictors, you'll find your fill times (and therefore TOILET NOISE TIME) will be reduced by quite a bit. Of course you have to pick the correct one to get a full bowl. But which is which? The "complete instructions" say nothing that I can find about these restrictors beyond "use them". Doh. Of course, it is not very difficult to figure out a little bit by eyeballing the restrictor orifice diameter. Bigger holes flow more bowl fill water, smaller = less. That's great to eyeball, but some kind of ACCURATE table in the instructions would be much better. I mean a table with RELATIVE bowl fill rates depending on which color you choose, like "NO RESTRICTOR = BASELINE, RED RESTRICTOR = 70%, GREEN RESTRICTOR = 50%, BROWN = 30%" or whatever... So, the "complete" (haha) instructions provide nothing about this. Not even a relative list of large to small by color. You have to figure that out on your own, which means trail and error and no good idea where to start. I guessed green and got close, but with actual information I could have gotten it exact the first time, saving at least five toilet flushes and twenty minutes of my life. So, time and water is wasted because I just didn't have enough infrormation. KOHLER MARKETING DEPT TAKE NOTE: If you are going to boast in your marketing drivel about "complete instructions" then by heavens, MAKE THEM COMPLETE! ;-) C.) Torque values. "Hand tighten" which the instructions offer as helpful direction is the same as saying "guess, based on your own personal strength". That is silly. Give a value. People who don't know how or have the tools will STILL "hand tighten" if you tell them. People who might care (like plumbers and/or engineers) will use the right tool and get it right, leading to fewer leaks and failures in the future. Ditto for the service line connection. Dear Kohler: No, "Use a wrench" is not a specification! Doh. PERFORMANCE AND NOISE: i.e. "QUIET FILL". Not terrible, but not really that quiet, again not compared to the OEM valves. I'm an engineer by trade, working specifically in a field where sound pressure levels are regularly measured. I even have the equipment, experience, and training to do it and I know how to interpret the results. I am not guessing here. My OEM factory valves were simply quieter than these replacements, and each of my four replacement versions have provided varying levels of noise, although each one has been exactly the same Kohler "Genuine Replacement" Part Number. CUSTOMER APPLICATION: If you get one of these and it is horrendously noisy, my advice is to send it back and get another one. You might get lucky on #2 or #3. That's not a very stunning endorsement of this part's number one marketing claim, i.e. "SILENT FILL". That's exactly what it says in brag #1 of the Amazon copy. "SILENT FILL" Two words. Now rant alert here, but work with me. So, FILL is obvious. It is a valve that admits water on demand. It works fine at that. But "SILENT" is a word with meaning and Kohler picked this word, not the customer. SILENT means "makes no sound", right? For example, if I showed you a BBC Video of an owl flying by night and in that video narrator dramatically announces how "the owl SILENTLY glides by, just a few feet away under faint moonlight...completely unheard even by a mouse, a SILENT hunter" AND yet what you SAW and HEARD in the video at that moment was the distinct noisy flapping of wings complete with an owl screeching and hooting, you would say "Gee...that is not SILENT". Get it? This valve is NOT silent. It may or may not be quieter than other valves like the Fluidmaster, but it is in no way SILENT. OK rant over. This valve sounds about like any other aftermarket valve, maybe a little quieter than a Fluidmaster, or maybe not...depending on the one in your box. PRICE VS VALUE & COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: This valve is priced above Fluidmaster and well above direct imported valves like Korky. Why? Because it says "Kohler" on the box. This valve is made in China, just like Fluidmaster and Korky and others. It is no better or worse than either of those brands. The box is a little nicer. Meanwhile, the rather ironically branded "American Standard" valve is made in Mexico, and comes in at a similar price as of summer 2026. Note that American Standard plumbing fixtures had started going with spec-made Chinese valves, which caused them considerable distress. (read their reviews) The new "American Standard" valves are now made in Mexico, and are apparently quite good. :-) But back to the Kohler. So why am I paying extra for a Chinese made-to-spec replacement part? Oh, I forgot. Because it has a "1 Year Warranty". hehe. Note that the packaging does not indicate ANY country of origin, which is normally against the law... but because it is as "Genuine Kohler Replacement Part" that's a loophole Kohler uses to avoid having to admit it is imported. Since they do not SCREAM "Made in U.S.A." on the part, you can bet it is NOT made in U.S.A. This is reality, because plastics manufacturing is a dirty messy dangerous and environmentally difficult industry. So, virtually every toilet valve sold to Americans on Amazon is made somewhere besides the United States of America, which is fine...and apparently the Mexican made "American Standard" valves are quite good? But Kohler hiding this part's country of origin feels cheap and dishonest. This is especially true given Kohler's massive investment in top-brand status marketing, complete with those weird commercials of beautiful models in green bathtubs looking all languid and glaze-eyed as they recline in the middle of a rain forest in their genuine Kohler tub :-) CONCLUSION ON PRICING Vs. VALUE: I will look at American Standard Mexican made 400 series valves very seriously for the next round, which I expect will be in about five years based on the historic performance of these Kohler Genuine Replacement Silent Fill valves. Who knows... by then maybe Kohler will be making THEIR replacement valves in Mexico? Overall - four stars. It is what it is. YMMV depending on which sub-vendor did the plastic casting. Plan on five year life cycle. Then you won't be disappointed. I'm not, but I will consider other brands come 2030...if I live that long :-)

My original Kohler GP1138930/400a lasted nearly 25 years - amazing longevity. I knew it was dying a slow death when I would hear it fill by itself at night and running long after flushing. I ordered this new valve from Amazon about a week ago. The valve finally quit last night and I shut the water to the toilet off and fixed it today. When I removed the 25 year old fill valve today and compared it to the new one, it was nearly a dead ringer. The major change that jumped out was that the former valve had a metal float adjustment rod had been changed to a threaded plastic screw rod which is actually far easier to adjust than the previous version. One thing to know is that this new valve is expandable in length to almost 14" from the inside of the tank to the valve top simply by twisting the threaded gray valve stem. It was exactly the same setup on the 25 year old valve and I just matched the length because there are 1" increments on the gray stem up to 13" and the original was set at 13". So take note of those little details if you are replacing the same valve and save some time and aggravation The new valve comes with a variety of color coded water restrictors that go on the output hose. The original valve didn't have any of these restrictors in place so I didn't use them and the valve worked great but your situation may vary. There are some helpful installation videos on YouTube if you Google "replace Kohler 400a toilet tank valve" and go to videos. I'm very handy around the house and was a diesel and auto mechanic decades ago after college to bank some $$ prior to going back to college for pharmacy school. I can fix almost anything but plumbing always seems to be my Achilles heel, even as a diesel mechanic - hydraulic lines can be a real pain. In home plumbing, there's always a leak, a missing part, some tool I don't have, something I over tighten and break or under tighten and it leaks or the inevitable hardware store trip(s). The new valve was simple to install, didn't leak, required very common hand tools and I only made one trip to the hardware store for a new 12" stainless supply line. If I'm changing the valve, I may as well change the supply line as well, The new Kohler valve is simple to adjust for fluid flow, shutoff height and actual installation. As I mentioned, plumbing never seems to go well for me despite the fact that I can wire outlets and ground faults, light fixtures, AC units and hot tubs, install drywall, do flawless custom finish/trim work and install any sort of interior door. But my plumbing skills simply suck. So this valve MUST be easy to install if a plumb-tard like me can get it done in under an hour. I realize some folks have zero ability in this area and that's plumbers make 6 figures a year because they earn it by being really good at work that annoys others to death. If you are one of those folks, dial up your local plumber and be ready to donate $100 - $150+ for this repair. I just ordered two more of these valves, new USA made 12" stainless flex water lines and new Kohler flush handles from Amazon for my other two toilets in the same house. If one valve died after nearly 25 years, the other two have to be close to failure as well so I may as well change them all out after beating the learning curve, while my plumbing luck holds out and before the other old ones crap out - pun intended. Photos: I added some photos. The left hand photo shows the my 25 year old Kohler/Fluidmaster 400a next to the new one from Amazon. The new one has been extended by holding the gray stem and twisting the black stem to it's max length for my installation - yours may vary. The middle photo shows the removal of the small blue metering jet from the new valve. My original valve had no metering jet installed and I followed suit. Again, your situation may vary. The far right photo shows one of the weak points of the new valve. The black tube is new and is included in the kit along with the little metal squiggle annotated by the red arrow. That metal squiggle is supposed to hold the fill hose in the plastic fill pipe in the toilet tank. The old fill tube hardware annotated by the yellow arrow is the original set up that I cleaned up with CLR and reinstalled. The new metal squiggle just didn't work for me and could be a 1 star deduction in some customers eyes. New isn't always better.

Solved the problem. The old one was letting water over flow into the tube. I think the float gets stuff in it. Changing is easy. Took 10 minutes or so. They give you all the parts you need.

The connector (7/8 ballcock) is special and not listed in the documentation. In Singapore this is not common and I had to order an special braided hose with the correct connector. But the fill valve is well built, easy to adjust the fill levels from the top knob.
