Review: Spray with HVLP - Love this stuff when thinned appropriately (xylene?). Follow directions with regard to thinning and cleaning. Not all cans of rust-oleum use the same agent. This stuff, thinned and shot with an HVLP gun, goes on fast, looks great, and lasts. Doesn't even compare to spray cans. If you've never used and HVLP gun, look in to it. It's cheap, easy, and efficient.
Review: Color (BROWN) is not as the shown "oil-rubbed bronze" (a bit darker than chocolate milk with mettalic). Still 5-stars. [Photo] - Please note the 5-star rating I gave this item - the color is still very pretty. I just painted a metal fence with it. If you notice that this review is a year or so old, send me a comment, I will tell you how it holds up in the Southern California sun. I used a 3/4-inch nap roller to put it on. Worked beautifully. I don't know why the product description on desertcart says that two coats are needed. The can does not say that. But I did that anyway. What the can does say is that a second coat may be applied withing 4 hours (but wait about 30 minutes for the surface of the first coat to feel dry) or if not within 4 hours then only after 7 days. I did two coats. The hammered finish is really tiny spots on the paint surface - not really noticeable on the railing but may be more noticeable on an area of larger flat surface. The color BROWN is much lighter than the desertcart picture shows (accurately - it's the same on the actual can). The picture shows almost an oiled-rubbed bronze (venetian bronze) color. It's not. It's like a shade or two darker than chocolate milk but with a hint of metallic in it. Especially in the sun it looks light colored. Still I like the color. However, if you are very particular about it, I suggest spot testing it before doing the whole thing to see if you like it. It only takes 30 minutes to dry to give you a very good idea of what the final color would be. UPDATE: I painted something else in the backyard with it (a metal door under a built-in gas bbq grill) and this time I took a photo of the can with some paint spilling over the label where it says "Brown" so you can see the actual difference of the colors (everyone's monitors are different so this should help to see both colors at the same time and be able to have a point of reference). The over-spilled paint is dry at the time of the photo. You will also notice the texture on the metal door. It was smooth black (with pretty "decorative" rust spots :) ) before. Note though that although I used a 1/2-inch nap roller (not a 3/4" nap this time) and there are only two coats (as recommended), it probably is still much thicker than it should have been - i.e. I should have used a smooth surface foam roller, I guess. Or a wide foam brush. Still, it looks fine in reality and I am leaving the 5-star rating. Another note - you do need to drop your perfectionist attitude for 30 minutes at a time as there is no going back "to just fix this a little bit" until it dries to touch in 30 minutes. I mean if you try a minute later to go back to where it's still wet and fix that tiny missed spot, it will be like painting with the "Liquid Nails" glue - your roller will literally get glued to it and it will start becoming a mess (ask me how I know).

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can you spray the product in the quart can? what thinners should you use? i have hvlp, a gravity feed and an airbrush to work with.**
A: The label says to thin with xylol. At a ratio of 1.5 to 2 parts per 8 for spraying. So, that is 6 to 8-ounces per quart.

**Q: what kind of silver paint can I use to paint a radiator**
A: Brenda,Radiator paint is black for a reason, but silver willwork. Get Rustoleum. Always get Rustoleum. It is the best out there.Tom

**Q: Hi, i was thnking of usising this to paint on the wwalls here, but will it cover/work good -over latex? jim**
A: No reason why it shouldn't, as long as the existing latex is free of moisture, dust, grease, or other things that would prevent the new paint from sticking and as long as the existing latex paint is well adhered to the surface. I'll caution you about using metallic paint on walls in general, though. First, it's oil based and gives off very strong fumes, so ventilate, ventilate, ventilate. These fumes are very hazardous to your health. Second, if you paint all the walls of a room with a metallic paint, the light will bounce from wall to wall, changing the look from metallic gold to brown and every brush or roller stroke will show. I have used metallic gold and metallic silver paints as the base coat for decorative paints that were then sponged or stamped over them, leaving just some of the metallic showing through as you'd get with a foil wallpaper. The effect is great. It will take about a month after applying the latex over the metallic for it to thoroughly adhere. Until then, be careful not to scratch it as it will peel pretty easily.

**Q: What exactly is the best paint to use to paint a rusty metal gate for a fence? Is this the right paint to use for metal?**
A: This is amazing paint. Clean your gate first...brush and sticky cloth to get off all the dirt and dust. You don't have to remove rust, just the loose stuff. Make sure it is dry before you paint. Then paint right over the remaining rust. It really works.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Looks exactly like hammered copper.
*by A***R on August 29, 2026*

This paint is amazing. The finish is very hard and looks exactly like hammered copper. Only thing--you need to have a special thinner for clean up. So, we just used our old paint brush and then threw it away after the paint job was done. I highly recommend this product.
