From this I'd assume the 500 mA (0.5 Amp) requirement is per port. I can't imagine a port delivering 2 full amps. I use it as a charger for everything with a USB connection. In my experience, it works well. Hope this helps. **Q: What type of power adapter works with this? Will a ciagarette plug type adapter work to hook up to a 12 volt battery?** A: It takes 12V DC. I use a 12V 15A power supply for the one I have. I'd want something around 1.5A at least. **Q: I currently have the 4 port but need more connections. could the 7 port be connected to the 4 for 11 ports?** A: Yes. You would need to use one of the 4 to hook up the 7port hub. So total you would have 10 (3+7) ports available.Keep in mind that this hub requires an external power source.
