Advice to potential buyers: read the negative reviews as they provide clues as to the mistakes others made with concealing, baiting, locating, and setting this trap. Squirrels are far more intelligent than rats, it would seem. Having used other bait schemes and traps, sold explicitly for the intended purpose of eliminating squirrels, it is clear that these other methods and devices only succeed in training squirrels in bait and trap avoidance. Squirrels invade walls and attic, in old houses particularly with copious wood trim and siding. After countless hours of planning, countless hours of research on professional pest removal techniques and animal behavior, a couple of hundred dollars worth of various devices and lures, repellents, including ultrasound, traps, electric zappers, scented concoctions, and even "humane" methods of removal, I can attest that these methods do NOT work. Squirrels are too smart, too strong, too big, too tough, too persistent. While it is true that ultrasound can be effective, it is temporary and eventually ignored by pests who become conditioned to hearing it. Also, pests will merely relocate to dead-zones (in walls) in the "shade" behind obstacles in the room. Simple body traps are not sufficiently engineered, requiring perfection in concealment and setting, and consequently are easily triggered by vibration or disturbance such as casual contact with a leg or tail. This causes even bigger problems than dealing with a carcass, as the rodent suffers needlessly and/or must be located. Body traps can be extremely difficult to set; this device is not difficult to set. Rodent poison is completely ineffective; forbidden poisons for "non-scheduled usage" must be avoided since they are too dangerous in a residential environment, for children, pets, and the property owner (think water contamination). Making a palatable bait with a deadly toxin defeats the purpose of avoiding the health hazards associated with squirrels. Finally, all poisons are deadly to birds and other wildlife, as poisoned carcasses are distributed through the environment. Once squirrels become "at home", even if deterred temporarily by the various "professional" recommendations that allegedly block access, they will find a way to reclaim access, including chewing through the walls of the dwelling or outbuilding. Squirrels are undeterred by cats, as well. Cats are supremely effective at rat control; but squirrels will not enter portions of a building where they have detected other "warm and moving bodies" which is to say, potential predators. Despite initial reservations about spending even "more money" for this product, within 1 month of weekly success stories and mounting body-counts, I am evaluating whether to purchase additional devices for other outbuildings and vehicle locations. It seems that, in the spring, rodents like to collect firewall fiber from vehicle engine compartments for nesting material, and to eat wiring insulation and even fuel lines - problems associated with additional rodent species, as well. (Other rodent species must be controlled by separate means.) The device is heavy duty enough to withstand the enormous strength of squirrels; and, is not triggered by mice. (It is likely deadly to small pets.) It is humane, to the extent that dispatch of the rodent occurs swiftly - if you have properly placed and concealed the access to the trap. It is preferable to shooting squirrels - a danger to neighbors, if not illegal. This product has been a "godsend." Since the local population, i.e., native to the territorial boundaries of the residence, has been decimated, other squirrels seem avoid the residential area without investigating it as potential food source or habitat. That is, the normal daily activity of a local population apparently attracts other potential pests.

Bought this a year ago. Had good luck. A bit tricky to set! Be careful! Do not put your hands in front of this trap. It’s has a quick, powerful release and will instantly kill the squirrel. We feed the birds and don’t mind the squirrels getting some seeds. However this spring the red squirrels moved in and are chewing up the feeders and fence. I’ve had it. This trap is awesome. I used the sunflower seeds as bait. Just a small amount in the back of the trap. Three days. Three squirrels. Done. Finished. Excellent product but please be very careful setting it up. Place bait first. Be sure to secure it when setting it up. See directions and videos on this page. Great product. Sturdy. Will last several years.

This trap is usually quickly lethal but to be humane you need. back up method to quickly dispatch animals not killed by the trap. It immediately killed the first dozen or so squirrels but now about half required a quick kill. I use a water tub and drown them. Unless you have a method do not set this trap. My issue is squirrel raiding my feeders on my deck. I tried hot pepper laced seed mix to discourage the squirrels. I found that it makes a squirrel good bait. I sometimes add a few hazel nuts which seem to reduce the by-catch. I do not put food outside the rear area. In my location, the food near the front results in chipmunk getting trapped by their tails and not seriously inured. I have not been using gloves to set the trap and have a lot of dead squirrels. Perhaps the ones that raid my feeders are not afraid of human scent.

I’ve set and moved and reset this trap—following all instructions to the letter, including baiting it multiple times—and the trap hasn’t sprung or caught any rodents at all. The frustrating thing is, the bait keeps being taken… but again, no caught rodents and no sprung trap! I have moles, voles, ground squirrels, and other rodents here in CO, and I was hoping this trap would help me mitigate the issues and significant damage these rodents are causing to my trees and my septic leach field. But this trap has thus far proven to be 100% ineffective. Lest the obvious be pointed out, YES, I did unlatch the safety hook, and YES, I only set one spring bar on the trap—per the instructions (I bought the smaller, PVC version, not the larger trap, which requires setting/pulling back both bars). I’m strongly considering returning this trap… but I really want and need it to work! Suggestions?

4 squirrels in 2 days. What more can I say?

This trap has worked great to help slow down the squirrel problem here around home. The little ground varmints were everywhere, chewing their way under the deck, into the barn, attacking the bird feeders and being destructive. Ive caught 25 or 30 of them in the past fee weeks. This trap is easy to set and easy to remove the trapped critter. The bait is convenient to maintain, it's fairly weather resistant and comes mounted to a wooden base. I recommend it as a possible solution to a small varmint problem.

I am using this trap to eliminate red squirrels. I trapped my first squirrel today, but the trap pinned the squirrel's rear leg. The trap neither killed nor maimed the squirrel. It held the squirrel and left me a rather tricky, unpleasant task to complete. I had to rush to complete the task because the squirrel was successfully working itself out of the trap. I am still rating this a 3 (instead of 1) because I can put this trap on my roof and I can be fairly confident it will not catch rabbits, birds, or my neighbor's pets. I appreciate how the trap has been designed to target specific rodents, but I do not appreciate that the trap makes me finish the job.

I have been fighting squirrels & 'monks for over 30 years. The live cage type traps work poorly for me. Bait Gone, and no animal. This trap is AMAZING. I had 2 days with 4 squirrels each,,,, and days with multiple 'monks. THERE ARE HINTS FOR GOOD HUNTING. (1) Use gloves to avoid your scent on the trap -- even when opening the shipping box. (2) mount with screws to a board at least 12" x 16" - gives you leverage when you remove and reset. Drill holes in the "trap wood" and secure to a better base. (3) buy an ant killer --- the Squirrel bait attracts many ants, and the squirrel will stop eating. (4) I place any bait inside the INLET of the tube (peanuts) - not on the "nail" at the end. I want clean broken necks -- not a crushed abdomen. (5) I hose it off every 4 days, but no mess means no need to clean often. Peanut butter leaves a mess - I just used peanuts. ESCAPE is rare - only 2 out of 20 took the bait and escaped. (6) I check trap every 3-4 hours - allows multiple kills per day. Wear gloves when setting trap after a kill. PS - I have another kill today to remove and reset. GOOD HUNTING. I'm running out of squirrels.
