## Description

Product Description This electronic preamplifier stands up to the test and will provide you with serious sound performance. The PP444 is perfect for bringing your studio equipment's phono-level output to a more suitable line-level output. It'll take your audio signal, amplify its strength and prepare it for further processing by your receiver or amplifier. Preamps technically provide voltage gain to your desired equipment and are key to assisting the signal source, whether it's a turntable, musical instrument or microphone. The ultra-low noise audio conditioning circuitry allows the preamp to boost audio to levels that are more manageable for various types of audio equipment. You'll find it easier to adjust the recording level volumes of different sources from microphones and instruments alike. You should position your preamp close to the source to reduce unwanted noise and interference. Preamps can sometimes come built into the stereo equipment, but if that's not the case, the PP444 is an easy install, wise choice and great addition to any musician or producer. Take your sounds and audio production skills to the next level with the PP444 Preamplifier. Review: It’s a lot better than what the name suggests. - Purchased this pre-amp 6 months ago because I my reciever amp lacked the phono section. It works great and I understand any hang up since the name reputation of the product isn’t very good. If you’re like me and you wanted to listen to records but you have a newer AV amp without a phono input this will get you there just fine. Sound is clear, easy to install, small and tucks away so nobody can see it’s a Pyle. I wouldn’t be opposed to buying another in the future
Review: WORKS FLAWLESSLY.. Read for how to and thorough info! - Read in entirety: I purchased a Technic turntable, old-school, have a complete zone home ent. system, using sonos as well as wired speakers with the HTD control module and amp. I hooked up this system myself, I am very tech savvy, takes alot to stump me... Now that that's out of the way. The turntable I purchased used is a mid to high grade Technic, came with a Pyle preamp that had no ground, turntable did not come with ground wire either, this is important, noted later. I initially connected the turntable to the preamp "in" that I had, not this new one, with no ground, then connected the preamp "out" to my receiver "in", then receiver "out" to my controller "in", no sound and loud annoying hum. I then tried to connect the preamp "out" to my sonos connect "line in" bypassing the receiver, same results, then tried connecting directly to my controller, same results. Researched, completely baffled, did I lose my techi touch? Scratching head, discouraged, defeated? Not on your life! I ordered a factory ground wire for my turntable and this preamp with the ground connection, then... I started all over again preforming the same connections as before but with the turntable ground wire connected, initial loud hum happened, then went away and had dead silence. Scratching head again. NOTE TO THOSE CONNECTING TO RECEIVER OR OTHER THAN AN IN WALL HOME SYSTEM... the most important thing to know, if you connect this preamp and put it too close to an amplifier or other high electric output it will still hum, this needs to be seperated a little bit, keep reading. My final setup is removing my receiver altogether, turntable to "in" on preamp, preamp "out" to sonos connect "in", sonos is connected to controller, ground wire connected to turntable and preamp. Placed preamp next to turntable on shelf above controller and amplifier, only about 6 to 8 inches apart but shelf appears to add a buffer. Everything on, no hum, but no sound. Tilting head questioning again, more googling. For my system, my controller controls the volume up and down not the music source, I had to put the sonos sound level for the line in to 10, auto delay to medium, autoplay on to include grouped rooms but turned off autoplay volume, this makes it so music will start once the needle hits the vinyl, line out level is pass through because I have a controller, and wala, sound. Now it will play on my sonos without me using my HTD controller but it won't hit my wired speakers in group until I turn that on but when I do it all works. IMPORTANT GROUND WIRE and PREAMP NOTE... If you have a turntable that has a built in preamp you should not need this, read up on your system as some newer ones have one built in and it's a matter of flipping a switch on the turntable. If you have an old school turntable you are trying to connect to newer technology you most likely will need this AND the ground wire, the ground wire helps to disperse the bad waves to a non audible source and keeps the good sound going where it should, to simplify the why, if you do not ground your turntable you could still have a hum. Some turntables have a ground screw or plug in connection located where the red and white are plugged in, some ground points are on the under bottom of the turntable, I've seen some where you have to open the turntable to get to it, research your turntable if it has a ground point, if it does anywhere and you still have a hum, connect a ground and place the preamp away from high electric output sources. Enjoy your tunes. Good luck!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: My amp DOES have a Phono Input, but my cartridges are low output. Can I use this to boost the signal using the Phono Input to reduce audible hiss?**
A: No, you can't. This is a phono preamp with RIAA playback equalization that amplifies the signal about 100 times, so it essentially does what your built-in phono preamp does. The output signal from the separate preamp is equalized to a nominally "flat" frequency response and the amplified signal level will overload and probably damage your built-in phono preamp. Plug it into any other stereo line input on your system (AUX, CD, DVD, TAPE, VCR, etc.), but NOT the PHONO input! If you need higher signal gain, maybe look at phono preamps from ART or TCC that have output level controls. If you use moving-coil (MC) cartridges, you need a preamp specifically designed for them...they require at least 55 dB (over 500 times) signal gain vs. about 40 dB (100 times) for moving-magnet (MM) cartridges. Noise becomes a critical issue with MC cartridges because of their extremely low signal output, so good-quality cables and good turntable grounding are essential.

**Q: My turntable has very quiet output. Will this device help boost the volume?**
A: Yes, indeed. If your need was like mine (no built-in pre-amp on the turntable and no specifically dedicated phono input on your amplifier) you will find this unit to be the perfect solution to needed amplification of the turntable's output. Don't forget to hook up the ground wire as directed or you may wind up putting unwanted noise into the audio.

**Q: Unit works fine for awhile and then starts outputting static, even with no input connected. I've tried it with several amps with the same results.**
A: Most likely people who are having noise problems it is because of ground loop isolation problem. If you have a ground loop isolation problem grounding the preamp box is unlikely to help. Without getting technical, what you want to buy is a ground loop isolator or a humm eliminator; both the ground loop isolator and humm eliminator tackles the cause of the noise at the fundamental source of the problem, depending on your audio setup, one maybe easier to use than the other. To use the ground loop isolator or the humm eliminator they generally come with instructions, or you can google this topic. If the noise in your audio system isn't fixed by using this solution the first time, try putting the ground loop isolator and humm eliminator at various points in your audio system. Also you can talk to audio people and get advice about how to fix ground loop problems from people who setup big audio systems, for concerts and such; if you talk to the average electronic garage shop audio enthusiast you are likely to get bad advice, i.e., meaningless explanations. Also caution must be used when Googling this topic, much of the discussion, advice and explanation on this topic is bogus, you can get a general correct feel of this topic if you read a number of explanations. Also one more thing that can cause a "popping noise" is that you have too much gain, this is a phono amp and the gain is huge, it takes a 3mV and makes it 2Vp-p this is a gain of around 100 to 200, if you gain up the audio signal too much then the signal out of your amplifier runs out of head room and clips, this can cause a popping sound, essentially you have too much gain. If this is occurring you need to either buy a preamp with less gain or attenuate the signal before it gets to the preamp. If this is a problem, too much gain, you can buy preamps with gain control.

**Q: What equalization is incorporated in this preamp?**
A: RIAA equalization

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent value, ground loop hum
*by R***Y on March 3, 2014*

I bought this as a gift for my fiancée's parents to hook up their old turntable to a newish A/V receiver which did not have a phono input. This preamp is a great value and works well. The connectors are clearly labeled and couldn't be easier to set up. The sound quality is very good to untrained ears and acceptable to an audiophile -- for most people, this unit will not be the limiting fidelity factor in their home audio setup. The build quality seems high overall. The metal case and the connectors are very sturdy. I connected the unit with some Monster RCA cables that were lying around and had to use an uncomfortable amount of force to seat the connectors fully, but the unit handled the stress without trouble. I had to add some rubber bumper feet on the underside of the preamp to prevent it from scratching the furniture piece it sits on. Given the sharp edges of the metal case the preamp is built into, I would expect it to come with felt or rubber bumpers for this purpose. A green light indicates that the unit is powered, but there is no on/off switch. For people who are energy-conscious and those who would be distracted by the bright green light in a dark room, this means physically unplugging the wall wart or disconnecting it from the back of the preamp when it's not in use. A physical switch to turn the preamp on and off would have been better. Despite the overall sound quality being good, I can hear a distinct 60Hz hum even with the ground connected to the lead from the turntable and all of the A/V components connected to the same AC circuit. There is no difference between connecting the ground and leaving it disconnected from the turntable ground lead. I am going to investigate other possible sources of the hum in the system, but the fact that it can't be heard from any of the other sources connected to the A/V receiver suggests to me that it is either a problem with the turntable or the preamp.
