what determines whether or not you get one with a black polisher head and backing plate as opposed to white?

At present, our pro series polishers are all with white head.

I saw reviews about this machine coming defective , either backing plate not spinning properly and others , is this fixed?

Yes as far as I know. I've never had a problem with there products. You have to watch some reviews. People get the polisher and don't oil the backing plate before installing. Or they simply don't know what there doing. If something is wrong they have excellent customer service.

What can be used as a 5" backing plate for the m21 pro.....i want to purchase this unit but i do not use a 6" bp.....thanks

Just change the backing plate to a 5 inch they are interchangeable maxshine has 5in backing plates

What are the benefits of this machine over the previous model other than the increase wattage?

This new polisher with 1000-watt motor, used CNC machined counterweight. It also upgrade to progressive switch trigger which is more comfortable when using. Beside, it different from M15 in dust vent, constant speed controller...
