Can this product be used to fasten fabric to fabric when a wood, fiberglass, or other solid substrate is not available?

I don't think so. The male piece has a screw thread to go in a pre-drilled hole in a solid substrate.

Do you think this might work on a squier bass given the fact that i would not be able to use the original screws? or could i use the orignal ones?

Yes, I have installed these on a couple of guitars and basses. I don’t remember having any problems with the screws. You may have to flatten out the part that attaches to the strap, as-delivered it has some curvature that makes it difficult to attach to a thicker leather strap.
