I used to play Mahjong as a kid but haven't played for at least a couple of decades, so I have forgotten how to play. My mother recently gave me her old Mahjong set, but the manual is old and weathered. So I was really excited to find this mahjong guide. I love that this is a set of 4 manuals, so each player gets their own guide which they can reference during the game without having to pass it around. The manual uses large print, so you don't have to strain to read it, and the color photos are clear and great for a quick reference. The quality of the manual is very good with thick, glossy paper that won't tear easily and the print quality is excellent. However, if you are a compete beginner, be warned that this guide is not a step-by-step guide of how to set up, play and score. Rather it is very detailed in explaining the different terms, combinations and their corresponding scores, as well as the rules of the game. The manual covers the basic set up of the game, but is not very detailed. I had to watch a few You Tube videos to remind myself how to set the game up properly and pick tiles. It is perfect as a reference for how to collect, arrange and group your tiles for winning hands, but not a detailed description of how to actually play the game. It also refers to scoring and "paying" the winner but doesn't describe how to do it. You will have to watch videos or read articles online that will help explain those details. Despite this though, it is a great reference to help mahjong players, new or experienced, especially with current rules. So if you intend to learn how to play mahjong, this is a must have once you have mastered how to set up and begin to play.

We recently got a Mahjong set, but we've never played before and needed some instructions. The set came with some, but those can be so hard to understand. The detailed instructions and pictures were very helpful in understanding the game. Having a set of 4 is nice, so everyone can have one without having to pass them around. I teach classes and participate in several American Mahjong clubs so I am always on the lookout for teaching tools to share with people who are interested in learning to understand the game of American Mahjong and to play. These 4 booklets contain a good amount of rule information, so they are handy things to reference the rules of the game as you are playing if that's necessary, but they don't really provide complete information. It's also worth noting that the general rules provided are not tied to specific years like the rules cards that are put out annually by the National Mah Jongg League so the inclusion of the years on the cover art is misleading. These are helpful tools for the players in my group, but incomplete in their instruction usefulness. The price is a little high for what you are receiving, but the booklets are of good quality and will not be easily damaged in regular use. They are also small enough to be easily included in your portable mahjong set.

These 2026 American Mahjong 4-pack reference manuals are exactly what my family needed. The pages are clean with clear pictures, making them easy to read and follow. The quality of the print and paper is great, and the content is easily searchable, which helps when we’re trying to find specific rules or combos quickly. Perfect for my family size of two adults and two teenagers—our baby isn’t playing yet, but maybe soon! Overall, a fantastic set for both beginners and seasoned players.

This is a set of short pamphets, 4 in total that are meant to be shared with a gaming group, or perhaps to be available as a reference. The bookles are brief, and don't offer any editorial content beyond the rules. You can find better guides for free, in my opinion. A printed reference is nice when you are starting out, but these little booklets are disappointing for the price.

I received a 4-pack of this Mah Jongg Reference Manual. The booklet is 27 pages and the pages are made of a thick laminated cardstock. The booklet is in color and the pages lay flat when opening. It has a brief description of how to play the game. I do think someone who has the book should know a bit about the game in order to understand this booklet. The best part of the booklet is how they describe each section of the Mah Jongg Card by section: 2025, 2468, Any Like Number, Quints, Consecutive Run, 13579, Winds-Dragons, 369, and Singles and Pairs. Every line in each section has an example of how the tiles can be used. I learned Bam, Crak, Dot and the booklet uses the terms "Bamboo, Characters, Circles. This booklet will be helpful if you are just learning the game and have a bit of experience. I don't think this booklet will help for those who don't know anything or for anyone who is experienced in playing. At the time I received these four (4) reference booklets, they were priced at $20 which is $5 per card. I think this is a reasonable and competitive price. I'll pass the other three (3) booklets to a few of my friends who are just learning the game.

These large mahjong cards are great for a new player because they have text and illustrations to help teach the new player the right runs and rules of the game. I appreciate that they are a heavy cardstock and aren't flimsy. They can easily be held and read while going through the game. The cards are thorough with plenty of detail to help a player be successful.
