Does rack mount easily on the newer square closet rods

I don't know. My closet rod is "round". It was too big in diameter for mountingyour tie rack with the "spacer" attached. In taking the spacer out, the rack wastoo loose when fully tightened. I had to improvise by making a shim that wouldallow the tie rack to be firmly secured once the set screw was tightened. Youradjustable extension at the back wasn't long enough to reach the back wall and still be sturdy. I had to install a spacer square block of wood by attaching it to the back wall of the closet. This made the extension coming out of the tie rackmore sturdy by not being extended so far out.

Can this be mounted to a wire shelving system?

I'm afraid I can't answer that question. My husband attached his to the wood rod in his closet. Our shelves are all solid in our closets. Sorry :)
