A Sweet Taste of History captures the grandeur of the sweet tableโthe grand finale course of an 18th century meal. Rather than serving something simple, hostesses arranged elaborate sweet tables, displays of ornate beauty and delicious edibles meant to leave guests with a lasting impression. A Sweet Taste of History will have the same effect, lingering in the minds of its readers and inspiring them to get in the kitchen. This gorgeous cookbook blends American history with exquisite recipes, as well as tips on how to create your own sweet table. It features 100 scrumptious dessert recipes, including cakes, cobblers, pies, cookies, quick breads, and ice cream. It includes original recipes from first ladies well-known for entertaining, such as Martha Washingtonโs An Excellent Cake and Dolley Madisonโs French Vanilla Ice Cream. Chef Staib also offers sources for unusual ingredients and step-by-step culinary techniques, updating some of the recipes for modern cooks. This wonderful keepsake will bring a bygone era in America to life and inspire readers who love to cook, entertain, and follow history. Review: One word.....FANTASTIC...!!! - This is a fabulous cookbook filled with recipes and vivid photos of our country's 18th century sweet treats along with historical information of the cuisine. Chef Staib is an expert in 18th century cooking. In addition, he is the chef-owner of the City Tavern in Philadelphia, PA,(opened Dec., 1773),author of "City Tavern" cookbook, and host of "A Taste of History" food show on PBS. This is a perfect companion to the City Tavern book and, along with the recipes, is just an interesting book to read and display on your coffee table. Thank you, Chef Staib, for sharing your expertise and knowledge. Review: Great Recipes, Great History, Great Photography - This is a wonderful cookbook. The photography is gorgeous. The history is fascinating. The recipes, which are well written and easy to follow, are *delicious*. I highly recommend both this book and the PBS TV series hosted by the same wonderful chef. I am not ordinarily a fan of cooking shows, but his is fantastic. So are his cookbooks.

Colonial Cookery for Everyone!
I do recommend this cookbook for anyone who loves colonial and revolutionary era history or for anyone who simply enjoys food. I have a goofy crush on Chef Stain and I have watched all of his historic cooking shows. My poached pears were delicious.

Awesome book
I've picked out a couple of things to make so far. I would have made a cake for Christmas but I didn't have all the ingredients I needed. Beautiful pictures, also has a forward written by David McCullagh who wrote the forward for the City Tavern cookbook as well. Love the history with the recipes in this book. I also watch "A Taste of History" whenever it is on. Excellent book and would definitely recommend it as well as the City Tavern cookbook. They make a great set.

Very traditional recipes. Many reminded me of my childhood. Nothing too complicated and lots of interesting historical facts sprinkled throughout.
