The colors are good and it is easy read in day or night. There are three night time brightness levels you can choose from. At key-on it does a self check routine which includes a full sweep of the needle and flashing of the gauge face itself. The gauge is smart enough to run this check at key-on and then wait while you charge the glow plugs up. When you then start the engine it does not go through self check again, which is unnecessary of course at that point.I gave 4 stars because it comes with clear plastic tubing to hook up the gauge sensor and this tubing gets flexible and pliable from underhood heat and eventually loses it's ability to hold onto the male end of the sensor. This happened while on the road and I had to pull over and cut a new face on the tubing, which only lasted an hour before it also failed.
