I haven't had this drill for very long but it has already impressed me. So far I've used it mainly as a screwdriver with a corded drill doing the drilling, though this little beastie has also been used for drilling. I did a full day with it, roughly 9:00a.m. to 6:30p.m. and only needed the second battery in the last hour. That was a pleasant surprise and means that the third battery I bought separately leaves me a little over-equipped. It is light, compact and yet fairly powerful. The trigger allows much better speed control than my old drill which means no more breaking the heads off screws — a great blessing as drilling them out and replacing them adds time to a project. The torque setting seems as if it will be the thing I get used to last, not because it is awkward but because I have not used a drill/driver with a torque setting on it before. I doubt it will take long to get used to it. My big project this year is to replace nearly all the furniture in my home with furniture I have made myself, and to double the amount of storage space. Having the right tools for the job really helps, and this is one tool that doesn't feel as if it is going to let me down. EDIT: Did another day with this tool and it impresses me more each time I use it. I was able to use the hammer drill mode to drill into a brick wall and with new masonry bits it had no trouble. It was certainly slower than a mains powered drill would be but it was still impressive for such a small and light tool. The day was harder on the battery so I did need the second one in the kit quite early in the afternoon, but the charger in the kit can charge a battery in about an hour so this was not a worry. When I registered for the three year warranty I was very surprised to see what Bosch provide. There are disassembly diagrams for the tools you register and spare parts can be bought once the tool is out of warranty. Not only that but the spare part prices are actually reasonable! In addition I looked around the web site and found spare parts for power drills discontinued 25 years ago. That's proper backup for customers and gives me great confidence in my Bosch tools. Definitely recommended.

EDIT: I've revised this to 4 stars. I think I was a bit too harsh. Yes, it's still no good for brick, concrete or even hard wood. Since my original review below, I've been using it to hang an internal door, fit door handles and other carpentry tasks and it has done an admiral job for those tasks. Just get a rotary hammer as well if you need to drill brick and concrete. When I first received this combi drill, I loved it! Problem was, I had never truly tested it. It's pretty good for assembling flat pack furniture. (Note that you would probably need to buy more accessories such as hex bits.) The plastic carry case is also surprisingly useful. I also managed to use it to hang a towel rail in the bathroom. (Though this kit doesn't come with drill bits - I had to buy those too.) This drill made nice neat holes in the grout. The battery seemed endless for those kinds of tasks. You could assemble a whole houseful of flat pack furniture on one battery. I questioned whether I really needed two batteries. Fast forward 3 years and now I have some real DIY tasks... and this drill didn't fair so well. First, I tried to drill some 16mm holes in wood to fit a mortice bolt. Drilling into a solid oak door with a flat wood bit got me nowhere. A couple of turns into the door, and it was clear there wasn't enough torque. I had to resort to a 25 year old corded Bosch drill which struggled but eventually powered through. This drill did manage to drill a 16mm hole in the pine door frame. So I guess you can drill 16mm holes as long as it is softwood. Then I tried to top fix some blinds. Unfortunately, my windows have concrete lintels. There's no chance this drill can get through that. (To be fair, even the old corded Bosch didn't make progress there.) So, what it couldn't do: - 16mm hole in oak - any hole (not even 3mm) in concrete What is good about it: - nice carry case - great as a screwdriver (as long as there is enough space) - can drill 16mm holes in softwood - can drill into walls, as long as it's not concrete So on hindsight, I wonder whether I would have been better off just getting a 12V drill driver and a separate SDS rotary hammer. A 12V drill driver should be more than sufficient for flatpack furniture and they are more compact. The SDS rotary hammer would be used for drilling into brick and concrete.

I needed a new cordless drill as I recently bought a house which came with a long list of minor DIY jobs to tackle, from fixing brackets to walls, to building flat pack furniture, to fitting curtain poles, and my ageing cheap old drill just wasn't cutting it any more. This package seemed great value with 2 batteries and the quick charger and I've had good experience with Bosch tools before so it seemed a good bet. This is a nice compact drill, probably getting on for half the size of my old one (although granted that one was about 8 years old so I'd expect tech to have improved and compacted in that time), making it much easier to use in tighter spaces and generally less unwieldy. It feels nicely balanced in the hand and easy to line up as needed. The auto lock chuck is a nice touch, making tightening up bits a piece of cake, and an equally nice touch is the work light that shines up from where the batter pack attaches rather than from behind the chuck, making it less easily obscured In all honesty I didn't originally buy this model for the hammer drill function, I already had a powerful corded drill on loan for masonry drilling so bought this mainly for the regular drilling and screw driving functions, but the price difference between the regular and combi version of this model was so small it seemed silly not to just go for the combi anyway. Nonetheless, this little piece of kit has really pleasantly surprised me, I've used it for drilling into brick several times already and it's handled it no problem. Now granted I'm only talking between 3mm and 6mm holes in regular house brick, but nonetheless I've been impressed by how much this compact little unit will handle without complaint. It has also handled all the typical screwdriving and wood drilling applications you'd expect without complaint. Considering it technically comes with a little less torque than some of it's competitors (but comes in a little lighter as a result, so swings and roundabouts), as a casual DIY-er I've yet to come up against a situation where I felt it was lacking for it's purpose I've only had this drill for a short while so can't comment as to how well the batteries last and how well it continues to perform over a long period of time, but on early impressions I'm very impressed and extremely happy with my purchase. Just be sure to use decent drill bits with it (true of any drill), I at first had a feeling it was slightly misaligned as it was wobbling in my hand in use, but it turned out that I was just using a cheap drill bit which had bent!

I have always had Bosch electric drills and they have always proven themselves to be reliable and sturdy. This 18V driver is powerful enough to drill a decent sized hole (10mm) into solid walls, yet light enough to be easy and comfortable to use. Having two batteries is extremely useful as you can charge one while using the other. It can be really frustrating to have to stop mid way through a job because the battery has run out. The 1.5ah batteries that this comes with last quite a long time. The fastest that I have managed to run a battery down is around 30 to 40 minutes. However, that was the rather extreme case of drilling holes into hard tiles with a diamond drill bit - where each hole took a few minutes of constant drilling. Generally, the battery will last far longer than this - and far longer than it takes to recharge one battery while you are using another. You can buy larger capacity 2ah (around £30) and 2.5ah (around £40) batteries but I find that having two batteries eliminates any requirement for having a higher capacity battery. (Note that the Bosch professional batteries with 4ah and 5ah capacities do not fit this drill.) The key advantage of lithium ion batteries is that they do not discharge while not being used. So even if you haven't used the drill in a few months you will find the battery is still just as charged as when you last used it. The Bosch chuck-less system works very well. I had a previous version of this drill and this model appears to be a refinement of that one - being slightly smaller and lighter. I was disappointed that the drill no longer comes with a separate handle for heavy duty drilling jobs.

Smaller than the average 18v cordless you would expect it to be a little underpowered, not in this case! Being a little more compact than other 18v drills is one of the main reasons I chose it as it will not take so much room up in my tool box as I have to drag it around with me all night being a maintenance man. I was expecting it to be less powerful than other larger makes I have had in the past but surprisingly it packs a real good punch. If you have ever tried drilling stainless steel you will know even with new sharp drill bits it tends to wear the battery out but not with this Bosch it took it all in it's stride. With long lasting, powerful batteries and such a good price I have ordered another one for home use. It comes with two batteries but if your only going to use it for home DIY I would suggest going for the single battery option(£20 less) as that will be fine for occasional usage. The battery itself has a charge indicator LED lights and a spot light which shines exactly where you will be screwing or drilling. It's weight is not as heavy as other drills I have had but still feels very sturdy, very well made and not so tiring on the wrists. It has variable torque settings for screwing, a normal drill setting using the trigger for speed control, with a fast and slow control slide button on the top of the drill housing and, of course, the very handy hammer setting. Comes in a plastic moulded strong box, with charger, double ended Philips and flat head screw bit.
