Read it for the prose more than the philosophy.
Don't read this as a history. Read it as a rockstar philosopher's comprehensive commonplace book on western philosophy. More than the material, the book's most compelling strength is its style. Russell's writing is clear, intelligent, and accessible. It makes complex philosophical concepts understandable to a broader audience. His prose is eloquent, yet concise. Readers get to explore intricate philosophical discussions without feeling overwhelmed. Russell's logical, analytic framework excels in narrative and context-setting. It turns a text-book treatment of dry facts into a story of causes and consequences. From its birth in ancient Greece, the story follows philosophy's growth up to the 20th century. For each period, it explores the intellectual climate, cultural context, and historical events. This shows us how philosophical thought evolved in response to changing times. Almost as if Philosophy is a character coming of age in an inhospitable world. But the extensive subject matter means there are some obvious limitations. We see philosophers through Russell's lens. Certain periods and thinkers receive more attention than others. His analytic framework makes it a long list of what Russell agrees or disagrees with. Often, his tone becomes patronising. Some critics say his treatment in certain cases is outright misleading and unfair. Nonetheless, Russell strikes a fine balance between depth and breadth. This work is a valuable introduction, offering one good framework for explorating philosophy. You might want to supplement this book by reading similar historical surveys. A.C. Grayling, Frederick Copleston, and Anthony Kenny would be my recommendations.

Original book
The book I ordered is the original book. Pages are perfectly fine and font is easily readable which took me to this conclusion that it is not a pirated copy of original book. The best thing is the delivery service.

Marvellously concise and sensible. An essential guide to the understanding of Western Philosophical tradition in context. Russell's scrupulosity is amazing.
