Simple story, moving in places, can be appreciated by adults as well as children
Wishtree by Katherine Applegate Audience: All ages above 10 years Genre: Fantasy/Allegory/Social harmony/Animals and environment-consciousness Rating: 3.5/5 The book is about a girl from a 'different' religious background who moves into a typical American neighbourhood and finds it hard to make friends. An incident occurs that makes her family feel unwelcome and consider moving out. However, a tree, and the animals that it shelters, intervene and the story ends happily. The story is told by the tree which is believed to have the capacity to grant wishes. The book is simply written and will charm children; and adults might find it moving. The introductory chapters, however, were somewhat long.

This middle grade chapter book is deceptively simple with a majorly powerful messages about community, wishes, friendship, history, stories, and the delicate balance of nature. I loved the narration from Red (a grand old red oak tree) about their neighborhood with the people, animals, and the magic of wishes. The story they tell is amazing and I could picture sitting under the limbs and just being still. This book has been banned because of the narrators use of diverse pronouns and acceptance of multiple pronouns, because the narrator is a monoecious tree (meaning it has both reproductive processes). Seriously, people object to a tree being scientifically correct?

Trees have a story to tell. This one is worth taking the time to hear. Tenderly and.warmly told with insight and hope, its narrative is well worth the short time it took.

Book was purchased for the school to replace one my son loved too much and ended up damaging. It has been read and re-read by my 12yo boy and has been thoroughly enjoyed
