GROSCHE Madrid Glass French Press Coffee and Tea Maker, 34 oz (1000 ml)

First off, this press is as aesthetically pleasing out of the box as it is in the picture, but even better, there is no form over function issue. While I did coffee-geek out and study up on how to best use a french press, my first cup from it was way better than expected! And when a proper course grind was used, there was not even a speck of coffee bean silt in my mug. The secondary filter feature is nice, although I'm not sure how anything that could get past the mesh would then not also slip through it, but it does provide a nice way of keeping heat in when you turn it around so that the filter does not match up with the spout. It does take a surprising amount of grounds (at least 8 tablespoons for the whole liter), so make sure you don't pour in the hot water past the top metal rung or you'll make a mess when you insert the strainer/plunger. I'm sure that would be obvious to some, but the first time I used it, I measured the water to be heated by filling up the press to the brim, which of course will not all fit back in. Having discussed optimum press size at length before purchasing, I'm also really pleased with the 1 liter model. It makes two enormous mugs for one person or easily a decent cup for at least 3 people, especially if you adjust the amount of grounds added so that the coffee comes out stronger. Perfect balance for daily individual use versus occasional guest use. Now, I genuinely have no complaints about this press but absolutely one caveat. After all my research on french presses, I understand that the single 'con' of this item is common to ALL french presses using a borosilicate glass beaker, so it would have been unfair to dock any stars. Alright, enough buildup. Be gentle with the carafe!! I'm sure anyone who's previously had a french press already knows so, but this one's my first, and yes, I broke the carafe after not even a week. Sigh. That bit in the item description that "a French press coffee and tea maker like MADRID is also perfect for for taking with you on your travels, or camping as well," seems a bit of a stretch. Maybe if you routinely travel with enough luggage room for a coffeemaker wrapped in 8 layers of bubblewrap. Thankfully, Grosche is a small business and it was a pleasure to talk to their customer service. (They pick up right when you call...not even a menu!) Apparently they may soon be showing up in Bed Bath & Beyond (fingers crossed), which will make picking up the next [few] replacement carafe[s] even easier! And when they design a stainless steel or aluminum beaker that will fit, we'll really be in business... -buyer's sister

My wife and I had given up on drip coffee makers, and because we'd been very impressed with the coffee friends had made us in French presses, we decided to go that way instead of getting a Keurig. I obviously have no other models with which to compare, but I've been rather impressed so far. We've had the unit about a month and probably used it 12-15 times, normally preparing its full capacity. The coffee is better than any drip I've ever had, and teamed with a very coarse grind from our Bodum Burr Grinder , we get almost no grinds in our cups. I think that has much more to do with the good fit and quality of the primary strainer than the second filter in the cap; the slots are so large as to only block clumps of grounds. The unit seems very well-built; it's fairly hefty for what it is, especially the metal cage and handle. The cap of the press mechanism feels a little light, but the mesh and strainer are solid and fit the pitcher perfectly. While the borosilicate glass doesn't feel like something I'd throw in with other items to wash in a sink, if you simply wash it in the cage right after you press, you never have to worry about it. As others have pointed out, you should never use metal utensils to stir the coffee or clean the pitcher; use wood or plastic. I've found a silicone spatula works very well for both. Pros - Makes the best at-home coffee I've ever had (steep for 3.5-4 minutes, stirring every minute). - Strainer fits the glass pitcher perfectly and is well-built; almost no grinds end up in cups. - Metal cage and handle feel very solid. - Much less expensive than most quality drip makers. - Easy to clean/maintain. - No power needed and no water left over after brew, so much easier to travel with. Cons - Glass pitcher seems a little more fragile than the rest of the unit, but if cared for properly, it shouldn't be an issue. - Only nets about three small-to-medium mugs or two medium-to-large mugs/tumblers. You might want to keep a drip unit on hand for parties. - Takes a little more time/effort than just putting grinds and water in a drip maker. It takes me just short of ten minutes with grinding, heating the water, steeping, serving, and cleanup. I would definitely recommend this unit for people who drink relatively small amounts of coffee on a regular basis.

I have never used a french press before, and since my old drip coffeemaker bit the dust, I was looking for an alternative that wouldn't give my water a "plastic" flavor. This press got very good reviews, so I gave it a try. My first impression is: I think I am going to love this thing! Here are the Pros: It makes a wonderful, flavorful and fragrant cup of coffee. If you grind your own coffee beans, it has the freshest flavor! It has no electronic or high-tech parts to break down. It is very easy to use. It takes about the same amount of time as an auto-drip. You can use it for tea also (loose tea is amazing!). Super easy to clean and store. The overall design is kind of modern and funky, in an IKEA sort of way, so if you store on your countertop, it looks way cuter than an auto-drip (and takes up much less room). I could probably take this to work and use it easily, since we have a water dispenser with instant-hot water. I'll update this review later if I try it that way. Here are the Cons: You cannot program it to have your coffee ready when you get up like an auto-drip--maybe you could program an early-rising spouse to make it for you! It makes only 32 oz. of coffee, which is about 3 good-size cups. This particular model had no instructions whatsoever, so I had to look up a step-by-step that included how much coffee grounds to use. Overall, the I feel the Pros outweigh the Cons by a wide margin! If you need more than 3 cups (if you have company or if you and your mate like a few cups each in the morning), simply pour your first batch into a separate carafe and make another batch immediately. The second batch will take less time because the glass carafe and your water are already heated up. I also frothed up some milk and added a little vanilla syrup for a super yummy latte! I can't wait to try it with a darker roast--my local grocery store didn't have a very big selection of whole bean coffee. Make sure you have a coffee grinder with a "coarse" setting, or use the grinder in the grocery store on the "coarse" setting. Do not use coffee that is pre-ground for auto-drip coffeemakers, that is too finely ground. I kept the box and the bubble wrap the press came in for easy storage (this takes up about 1/3 the space of my old auto-drip in the cupboard), and I even stored the frother and a coffee scoop right in the box. I taught my 14-year-old daughter how to press coffee, and it is quite easy to do. You will get more flavor from your coffee with a french press!

I've been using an Adagio IngenuiTea strainer for years and while very effective, I'm not fond of putting hot liquids in plastic for fear of chemicals leaching into my tea. It would also build up tea stains and etching so that nothing I ever put in it looked very appetizing. It works by straining tea out of the bottom when you press it against a mug so that you cannot see how full your mug is getting. I also managed to melt the feet on the base of it on accident which wouldn't have happened if I had metal feet. Thus, I began to look for a glass alternative for my loose leaf teas. I know there's a lot of french presses out there but I chose the Grosche Madrid based on the great reviews, the nice design (no plastic other than pour spout area) and the capacity since I tend to fill up a mug plus a 16 oz thermos every morning with tea. Yes, the glass is somewhat thin like most french presses but I have knocked it a dozen times at least on my granite counter tops and no cracking has occurred. It helps that it has a metal frame around it to protect it. Cleaning this strainer is very easy, not to mention there's no tea stains and no residual smells after several months of everyday use. I also like that I can save extra tea without over brewing it simply by pressing the strainer down. So far even the finest tea (other than mate powder) does not make it through this press (makes sense considering it is made for ground coffee). I'm really pleased with my purchase and highly recommend this french press for tea lovers.

SEE BELOW FOR UPDATE My review is not of the actual product, but of the shipping/customer service I received. I would have loved to have given a review of this product, which I'm sure works fantastically well, but I didn't have the chance to do so. I received the item in an Amazon box which was undamaged. The box the product was in was undamaged. But the actual coffee press inside damaged. All of the glass had shattered to pieces, making it very dangerous to open too I might add. I don't understand how this could have happened, because the packaging was not damaged at all. The product must have been faulty? Or someone was very careless at the warehouse. I decided to contact the seller about this, as I saw that they would do their "absolute best" to resolve my concerns with regards to breakage. Well I am still waiting on a reply from last week. I would have liked for it to be replaced directly, but it looks as though I will have to go through Amazon to get a refund and then start a purchase over again. Judging from the rest of the reviews this sounds like a great product, just a shame I wasn't able to experience it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Update: After finally receiving a reply from the seller they sent out a replacement to me. It arrived promptly in better packaging. The product works great, it is easy to clean and makes a great cup of coffee! Would recommend. This Grosche is the first french press I've ever purchased and so I'm unable to compare it to any other brand. It's pretty small, makes about 2 average sized cups of coffee. The glass container is rather thin, so I'm being extra careful not to bump it on the faucet when cleaning it. As for the coffee itself. I was told to expect some coffee grinds to escape the filters of a french press, but so far there have been absolutely no grinds in my coffee. This is a very simple and uncomplicated way to make coffee and I doubt I'll ever purchase another electric coffee maker as they've proven to be unreliable. I'll give Grosche 4 stars for the moment, only because I'm concerned regarding the fragility of the glass. BTW, the title for this review was intentional. : ) UPDATE: 3/20/16 So, I've had the Grosche French Press for about a year now. I use it daily, the glass container that I initially worried about is still in excellent condition. No stains, tarnish or signs of deterioration at all. The few times any coffee grounds made it into my brew was due to my own negligence in not tightening the filters after unscrewing them to wash. I have no complaints and so my 4 star review is now a 5 star review...still hate the Beatles. UPDATE 7/18/17 I still use this french press several times a week. Still, no broken glass, no stains and the filter works well when cleaned regularly and screwed on tight. A houseguest accidentally knocked off one of the rubber nibs holding the canister in place and so the canister now swivels a bit when being washed, no fault of Grosche so we remain at 5 stars ...I've also decided I'd have probably liked the Beatles if all 4 members of the Clash had replaced the original lineup.

Recently was introduced to French Press coffee... AMAZING! This product is very serviceable for your first French Press. I take gentle care of it as it IS glass, it WILL go from room temperature to near boiling very quickly. At this time 5-10 cycles have had no problem. I see that other users have expressed dishwasher safeness - the point of a french press is to produce a very "clean" taste. As such, I hand wash mine which is very easy as this product is wide enough to fit my hand in (fatter, not taller) which may or may not be the "best" for a french press, but for me - keeping the product clean has not and will not be construed as "difficult". The "press" portion comes apart easily and can be cleaned quickly and effectively. The screen does a decent job at keeping the particles out of my coffee. **Please note that I chose a cost effective grinder. This means that I will mostly get the coarse grind I am looking for but there IS some dust left over. This WILL cause some particulate to get through the screen. I like the coffee, better from a french press, Im not paying hundreds of dollars for a ceramic burr grinder that will likely still create SOME dust. The tiny particles getting through is the fault of the type of grinder I employ** I do not find this a suitable alternative to the auto drip on week days when trying to get out of the house, who enjoys their coffee on the way to work anyway!? This is the weekend coffee maker and has proven to be a great buy. The seller was very good - product arrived quickly without issue. Couldn't be happier currently with the product!

This blows my Bodum away on more levels than I can count. I'm even writing this while I brew some better coffee in it. Maybe my favorite way that it one-ups so far is in sturdiness. For its purpose and the price it's the perfect amount. The outer metal frame is sturdy enough that I don't have to worry about the handle giving while pouring or even swirling the entire thing in my hand (much easier than opening it up to re-stir). In comparison, I'd get a carafe of coffee on my floor with my Bodum. I like fine grind (powder coarseness) in my coffee, and the filter is fine enough that it only lets small amounts of the finest grind I can manage through. In hand-washing, its durability becomes obvious too. The metal frame holds the carafe snugly until I remove it, which is not a trivial design challenge (very little room w/the tolerances there). The carafe itself is solid enough to easily do the job while not being so thick that it gets in the way of heating and flexibility. The plunger is actually long enough to ensure all flavor is extracted, unlike my Bodum which leaves over an inch (4x as much room) at the bottom. Even the spout is done well--at first it seemed too small and you have to wait too long for a pour to finish, but it's turned into a design feature to help keep the coffee hot longer. It's not pro-grade, but for the price I can't say enough good things about this piece.

Love this GROSCHE Madrid French Press! I'm not a daily coffee drinker (neither is my husband), so we never wanted a bulky machine taking up counter space. This was a Christmas gift to myself for better hosting family and friends who crave coffee—no more Starbucks runs! It brews rich, flavorful coffee quickly and easily. Cleanup is a breeze (dishwasher-safe parts, borosilicate glass beaker rinses clean), and it looks sleek and attractive on the counter. The 1L capacity makes about 3 full-to-the-rim cups or 4 moderate ones—great for a small group. It doubles as a loose-leaf tea press too (more my speed!), though I haven't tried local loose tea yet. Highly recommend if you want simple, premium brewing without commitment—especially for occasional coffee hosts!

I had the brand’s 6 cup moka pot. Which I really enjoyed using, and I thought this was a good choice for multiple purposes for my hot drinks. And certainly it did not disappoint. I regularly use it for my coffee and many tea drinks. It is on the smaller size, but still very much worth it.

After trying a number of cafetieres with varying success I decided to do a but of research. My main requirements were a. Decent volume and a filter that let me grind medium to smooth without releasing any of the solid material into the cup. This has performed excellent in this respect. The additional filter at the spout is a bonus but the main mesh filter does the hard work. Additionally the design means you can leave it on the counter a it will stay warm for well over 30 minutes. Recommended.
