Rust-Oleum Varathane 211775H 1-Quart Wood Conditioner by Rust-Oleum

This item is hard to find in stores in California, specifically from this brand. This was used for a woodstain wash on a staircase handrail that was painted white by the previous owners. We tried to stain the wood without it after sanding the rail and it did not work out well. This made the difference and the color applied so much better. I never stained wood before so this is coming from someone with zero experienc. It came out looking professional. It is easy to apply. We saved ourselves hundreds in updating our outdated handrail.

I tried it as a test. I didn't get blotching whether I used it or not. With/without, no blotching, no difference. Occurrences of blotching may caused by something I am not dealing with, perhaps uneven moisture in the wood, wood that is not fully dried, something like that.

Great Product! After trying two other wood conditioners, a sanding sealer, a shellac and denatured alcohol mix, and a lacquer and lacquer thinner mix, I've found this to be the best product as it has consistent, beautiful, even finish results which, in my opinion, shows off the wood and grain on my new Eastern White Pine floors the best they can be. It allows the stain to penetrate with just enough color and keeps the wood from blotching. It also allows for a longer window of time to stain after applying. I am not getting paid to say this! I've spent about 3 weeks (and a lot of money) trying to get these floors right, and I'm trying spare someone else from going to all the expense and trouble I've gone through. I used it to help even the grain in the wood before staining. I brush it on and let it sit for about 45 mins depending on air temperature before staining.
