Originally published in 1985, Neil Postmanยs groundbreaking polemic about the corrosive effects of television on our politics and public discourse has been hailed as a twenty-first-century book published in the twentieth century. Now, with television joined by more sophisticated electronic mediaยfrom the Internet to cell phones to DVDsยit has taken on even greater significance. Amusing Ourselves to Death is a prophetic look at what happens when politics, journalism, education, and even religion become subject to the demands of entertainment. It is also a blueprint for regaining controlof our media, so that they can serve our highest goals. Review: Good read. Recommend for serious readers - A good read, but only for serious readers. A book way ahead of its time
This book was first published in 1985. Through this book author wants to create awareness around media consumption and itโs impact in moulding our culture. In todayโs time when there is so much information to consume, we should focus on choosing substantial content over entertainment and this book is all about this.

Images and news - out of context
I hardly read much but this was a brilliant read. Iโve purchased a kindle version for myself and two prints as gifts for friends. A brilliant read showing how images and news is without context. The quote by CNN in this items description is ironical. Theyโre oblivious to the fact that 24hr news channels like CNN is what this book warns against.

best book on television...if u watch 24 hr news or religious program ... must read
my first advice if you are a novice reader skip part 1 and complete part 2 of the book....after that read part1. this book is filled with funny yet serious knowledge about television..or for that matter youtube videos and channels that provide news, education, religion as entertainment...the bottom line is political discourse(discussion), education religion all depend on"language"..tv is totally "visual imagery" only good for entertainment...

Even though it was written many years ago, this book is a must read for anyone qho want to understand our society today. The same goes for Aldous Huxley "A brave New World". Two masterpieces.

Great read
Awesome! Even though it is an older book, it can really be applied to what we consume and how we spend our time in front of screens.

Still relevant today
Essays that are a few decades old can sometime fall into irrelevance, this is not the case here. A lot of the issues raised in this book from the golden age of television are still valid today in the age of social networks.
