I bought this for my wife because she is fair skinned and doesn't like to be out in the sun very long when at the beach. I searched through several of the other types of umbrellas and beach canopies, but couldn't decide on one that looked like it would give her much shade. I kept coming back to this one, but was still skeptical based on reviews that it was difficult to setup and was afraid she'd have some difficulty if she tried to do this alone on the beach. It was ordered on Saturday and received on Tuesday (/shameless plug to Amazon Prime and the awesome shipping), so that insured us plenty of time to set it up before we leave for the beach on Saturday. I wasn't home when it arrived, but my wife was so excited, she had already unpacked it and had it setup in our living room. She said it took her roughly 10 minutes to setup and seemed to be simple enough to handle even if there was wind on the beach. I think she was most excited because it is definitely way bigger in person than it is shown on the website. There is plenty of room to sit back into the tent area and be completely covered, or you can sit just under the shade and allow the sun to tan your legs. There is also plenty of room for your chairs, beach bag, and anything else you need to store out of the sun or in a safe place. Once she had her fun with it, she wanted to time how long it would take her to break it down and pack up. There were only a few snags, but still a breeze and not as difficult as other reviews have claimed. - The biggest issue is the mesh that your poles go through and when inserting or removing, they tend to get caught in the holes. I think a better design in that area (making the pole holes solid fabric) would assist in getting the poles in and out quicker and without them coming apart at the hinges. Still, she got the poles out and back in the bag in around 10 minutes with some of my help. -The only other MAJOR pain was the bag that the tent and accessories comes. Good luck getting the tent folded back down small enough to perfectly fit into that bag. It's almost like folding a fitted sheet and we know only witches can do that. She eventually got it tucked into the bag, but if you're hot on the beach and flustered from fighting with the poles and mesh, you're going to just shove it to make it fit which can lead to tears if you zip over it. Her recommendation and probably her own solution, was to just invest in a cheap beach bag big enough to hold the poles and the tent, so that way you can get it rolled down as far as you can and tie each end with the included plastic ties. It's not that bulky and the poles/stakes/sand bags all come in their own bags so it's easy clean up. I will do an updated review in a week or so once she has had time to enjoy it on the beach. So far, she thinks this is going to be a great investment and will be used many more times in the future!

I (like other reviewers here) debated between the Sport-brella XL and the Coleman Beach shade. I did a lot of research on shade structures. I chose the Coleman and am glad I did. The structure arrived earlier than expected. I set the structure up at home before leaving for the beach. Took me about 10 minutes the first time setting it up. I was able to easily roll it back up, poles and all and get it back in the bag. The bag is small but if you roll it just like they direct and if needed fold the tent in quarters to the size of the bag you can get it back in the bag. We took the structure to a windy beach in California. I set the structure up in camp (one could pop it open by your car) because I didn't want it to blow away, this took closer to five minutes to set up. Keep the tent zipped closed, pick it up, sort of 1/2 fold it and take it down to the beach. The tent stakes it comes with are short for the sand, but angle them in and they work great. We also used the Sand bags (comes with 6) they worked great to keep our blankets and the tent down. I was really worried about the window in the back only, (no side windows) but it was no problem, stayed cool even when there was no wind and it was hot on the beach. Opened the back door, kept the screen closed and it worked great. I saw others on the beach with the Sunbrella, they were constantly battling the sun. Moving the umbrella's. If you angle the Coleman correctly you don't have to battle the sun or move it. The front of the structure was just long enough to shade my family or we draped a towel a bit in the front. The structure is made of tent material, but it is strong. The front panel does zip closed all the way, there are other similar models that do not. We put two of the JJ coles essential blankets side by side just on the inside of the structure and it fit three adults with some left over room. The structure would fit a family with two adults and two small kids fine. We had a small cooler and a couple of regular sized back packs in the structure with still plenty of room. There are small mesh pockets on the inside near the front that held sunblock and sunglasses. At night we just zipped the tent up and took it back to camp, left it closed and took it back to the beach in the morning. When we left we packed it back down in camp. We just lifted the structure up and the sand slipped out. Packed it back down in the parking lot and fit it right back into the bag. I'm glad I chose the Coleman over the umbrella's. I can't say enough good things about this structure.

I have three different sizes of canopies shades, two Lightspeed Instant shades (Kona and Bahia) and Coleman Compact Shade Shelter. Each of them has its pros and cons and none is perfect. I am uploading photos of them so you can see how they stack with each other. Original we bought Lightspeed Bahia. We love it, but it is small. You could put two adult beach chairs in it, but it was cramped in it. Then we bought Lightspeed Kona (Costco has it for half the price then Amazon). That one was big, but you couldn’t pack it in the luggage when traveling on a plan for example (it is just really big when packed). Finally when Amazon had Coleman on sale we got that one. When packed Coleman is very compact and it can easily fit in the luggage. However, it does take time to set it up. It takes about 5-6 min to put it up (if you know what you are doing it should not take more than that). One person can easily set it up (it doesn’t need two people). It takes about 5 min to take it down and it does fit in its carry beg (tight fit thought). Size wise it is huge compering to two other ones we have. Comparing to Lightspeed Bahia it is about 40% bigger and it is about 20% bigger then Lightspeed Kona (it has more depth than Kona and side walls stretch out more front so it protects you better). It is made of better material then any of Lighspeed shades (and it will protect you from Sun). Two adult’s beach chairs fit perfectly plus any other thing you may bring to the beach. It also has zipper front door so you could close it if needed and use it like small tent (with back door/window open and front door partially closed we have our little ones take naps at the beach so we don’t need to go back to condo or hotel so they could take naps). However, with all its goodies, it does have cons. First it is not instant, so it does take time to put it up and take it down (as I said 5min top, but it does gets old if you need to do it every day for week or longer). Second, it has window/door on the back, but not on the sides so it does get warm in it. Lightspeed Bahia has window on each side so it doesn’t get hot as much (but then it is almost half the size of Colemen). So we are now using Lightspeed Bahia as single person shade. It is instant, small and practical (if one of us goes with kids to park for example). We use Lightspeed Kona if we are traveling by car (as it is not compact when packed, but it is instant and big and we love that). And finally we use Coleman when it needs to be packed in luggage as we are traveling by plan for example . At the end if Coleman was instant shade and it was compact when packed and had windows on its side it would be 5 start. But it is not, so 4 start.

We've used this at a hot air balloon festival and a beach and it has held up. We were staying at a condo with a private beach, so we were actually able to leave the tent set up for about 4-5 days. It held up surprisingly well, especially considering the last two days were extremely windy with a tropical storm blowing in. It never blew away, it never came out of the ground (even though we had done a shoddy job putting stakes in-we forgot the mallet). I have to say the fact that we could just leave it up was appealing, because I set it up by myself, while trying to keep an eye on a three year old, on a very windy day. It took me probably about 20 minutes, and wasn't a grueling task, but definitely a little tricky. I will note that I stopped several times, to tend to the kid, and to move to a more desirable spot, etc. And if I had to, it wouldn't have been "too much" to set it up daily. Provides great shade, could work as a single person tent. Some people have complained about it being "hot" inside, I didn't have a problem with this, but we sat in the doorway, partly in tent and partly under the little canopy, using the tent space behind us for cooler and toy storage. We were completely shaded. We usually opted to tuck the door under the tent so we could put our feet in the sand. It was very comfortable, I spent hours in that thing. Good for toddler naps, emergency changing rooms for diapers or swimsuits, and it was a great storage shed for our stuff during the week so we didn't have to drag it back and forth. It also served well at the festival, which was in a grassy field. It's still holding up great! No tears or damage despite being left on beach, and being used frequently. It's pretty easy to set up, slide three poles in, ta-da. We tied the sand bags around the stakes, and didn't use the lines and it still held up. I did practice setting it up at home in the yard and letting the kids play in it a couple of times just so I wasn't trying to read instructions and learn how to set it up on a windy beach. I would recommend this, probably save you some grief.

I purchased this shade after doing much research and reading many reviews, and could not be happier. There is a good reason it got so many positive reviews. One of the best things about this shade vs. a beach umbrella is that it can be put away in a very convenient and compact bag with handles. The set up was easy. We use Coleman tents for camping, so we know how they work. If you are new to setting up tents, I suggest doing a trial run at home. Once you figure it out, setting it up on the beach will be easy. The shade consists of the fabric part and 3 folding poles. The poles need to be assembled (takes 2 seconds) and slipped inside stitched pockets on the outside of the tent, then the ends of the poles are threaded into the holes on the bottom of the shade. This creates a standing shell shape. The shade's front has a large zippered door. In the fully open position it is meant to be laid flat at the entrance, to protect you from the sand. The back of the tent has another zippered door. It can be left closed, or you can open it for more ventilation. The solid fabric part can be rolled up and secured with buttons, leaving just the bug screen part open. The shade is very light, so in very windy conditions it might fly away if not properly secured. For that Coleman provided several bags that can be filled with sand to weigh it down, and extra long steaks to anchor it to the ground. The floor of the shade is thin, so I would recommend bringing a beach blanket or a towel to lay on. The shade is roomy, with high ceiling, and fit my husband and I very comfortably, I think it would be ideal for a family with small kids. It provides SPF 50, and if you are fully inside of it it, you are shaded on all sides, unlike being under a beach umbrella. I appreciate well thought out products, and I really liked that waterproof sheet of instructions is stitched right inside of the carrying bag. The last but not least, this lovely shade turns into your very own private changing room at the end of the day. I zipped both doors closed, and changed very comfortably out of the wet bathing suit, much better than a dirty public bathroom!!! I would recommend this shade for anyone who has children, or loves the beach but hates roasting in the sun, or wants more sun protection.

We purchased the medium size to provide shelter for the family during a 10 hour outdoor track meet. We have an EZUP shade, but wanted a windbreak and side protection. This fit the bill perfectly, and we received several "great idea!" compliments at the event. Here's my 2 cents: Size - IDEAL! we were able to comfortably fit two camp chairs, several bags, and 3-4 kids at once. The chairs were set in the middle so our heads weren't brushing the curved sides, and several large bags were tucked between the chairs and walls. The kids camped out on the floor behind the chairs with books, a chess set, iPad and DS. They seemed perfectly comfortable since were sitting in a grassy area. Once the number of kids grew to 6 we moved the chairs to the zipped down door and sat in the sun while the kids were shaded. Size folded - so much more portable than the EZUP! This easily fit back in the provided carry bag. I could see us taking this to the beach and future events - it's smaller than a camp chair and I think I saw in reviews that it can fit in a larger suitcase if flying to a location. Security - At our location we weren't able to stake the tent, but because this has a floor, the weight of the bags and such made it secure. We didn't have high winds, but I think it would have been fine if we had. If we had to leave the tent, I like that we could zip it up to keep our belongings out of sight. Ease of set-up - My husband and I easily put this up in about 5 minutes, first time, at the event without looking at directions. As other reviewers have mentioned, just be careful when sliding the poles through the mesh sleeves. The only con I can think of is that the back "window" has an external zipper. We did have curious kids unzipping the tent. I might just take the zipper pull off to make it more difficult in the future, as it makes the idea of using this as a place to change a bit uncomfortable! Bottom line - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED purchase if you're looking for a decent size shade and windbreak for beach or sporting event.

Just recently purchased this for the first trip to the beach with our 10 month old son. Understandably, we wanted to protect him from sun exposure. My biggest complaint about this shade was the challenge of setting it up. I was lucky enough to have three other people with me on the beach this weekend. While my wife looked after our son, it took all three of the rest of us to get this shade set up. I don't see how it would be possible for one person to get this set up by themselves. The stakes kept pulling out of the sand, and the poles are very difficult to feed through the curved liners. It took us nearly half an hour after unpacking the tent to have it set up and ready to use. My other issue was the tear down. Although admittedly much faster and easier than set up, the bag that the shade comes in was essentially useless. I meticulously folded and refolded and refolded again the shade to try to get it fit back in the bag with the poles, stakes, and empty sand bags. I just couldn't get it to fit and still allow the bag to zip. The quality of the tent was good once we got it set up, thus the three stars. It kept our son out of the shade and stood up relatively well to the slight wind on the beach. This being said, I likely won't take this back to the beach on our next trip. Instead, I've already purchased a tend from http://www.lightspeedoutdoors.com/. It's a shame this wasn't easier to use. Great idea and great way to protect little ones from the harsh sun while still letting them enjoy the beach.

Got it two weeks ago, have used it 3 times. Erects in 4 mins after practice, second person not necessary (but helpful) even in 20 kt beach winds. I assemble grey crossbar first, and insert into one eyelet. Then the two black bars, inserting one end of each into eyelets. Then the remaining end of the crossbar and two black poles are quickly placed into their respective eyelets, which tensions the fabric, causing the shelter to "pop up". Then we push floor stakes into sand. The shelter is very lightweight in the wind, but a small cooler placed immediately in the shelter during assembly stabilizes the unit, and makes it easy to handle. Plenty of room for beach gear, and two full-size adults can sit side-by-side in those chairs that are low to the sand, plus plenty of room for sleeping infants in the back. Large back window unzips for breeze, has mesh screen which can also be unzipped. Fully zipped, provides complete privacy for the girlfriend to change outfits as often as she wishes lol. This is GREAT shelter from the sun and the occasional chilly breeze. We're at the beach the whole day now, without fatigue, sunburn, or chill. Unlike a beach umbrella, this shelter weighs next to nothing, is easily back packed, always gives maximum shade, and never has to be moved to line up with the sun. I've set this thing broadside to the wind, and it flexes somewhat to accomodate the wind. This causes some decrease in headroom, and "side ties" are attached to the shelter to stake it out under these circumstances. But the headroom issue doesnt affect us in our low beach chairs, so I havent used the side ties. But with the higher kind of beach chairs, the side ties may have to be used, in broadside winds of maybe 12 kts or more. When you layout the shelter, be sure to keep a firm hand on those stakes. The suckers have a mind of their own, and if you let them get away, they WILL burrow immediately into the sand, lol. They can disappear fast. Maybe tie a foot or two of ribbon around them. We bought this as a possible replacement for a beach umbrellas, all of which seem rickety to us, and break when the wind catches them wrong. But with this shelter, there is absolutely NO ADVANTAGE TO AN UBMRELLA, and we will never go back to using one again. This equipment has turned us into "first-on, last off" beach goers. If you "beach it" with a dog, an infant, or anyone who needs or wants reliable shade during the day, this is the shelter for you.

I love it. Solid, practical, full of little pockets. It has all the Coleman attributes and is amazingly easy to set up and store. Holds quite well in high winds. It gets beautifully breezy inside with the back window, even in the hottest weather.

Last summer we bought a pop-up tent which was nothing but a nightmare. This summer we decided to go for a more traditional tent and so glad we did! This tent was sturdy (even for windy Nova Scotia beaches), we used it at Summerville and Carter's Beaches. Easy to put up, easy to take down. Poles held up strong. Screen in the back could unzip to let airflow through. Lots of room. It was perfect, I highly recommend.

Great size, will suit 5 of us! We had a smaller beach tent but we needed a bigger one. I like the green colour as most of them on the beach are blue and hard to identify! Easy to put up alone if you’re used to putting beach tents up. I like how small the tent is when put away. Highly recommend!
