A wonderful book on understanding comics,in its true sense. Loaded with information and history, and the science that works behind comics. A must read for any graphic novel enthusiast.

Its a beautiful decnstruction of the medium, the thing that makes this book special is how charming the writing is.The art might not be something special but it still manages to convey little nuances related to the medium with ease which goes on to show how capable Scott is when it comes down to his craftmanship.It not only goes into the medium itself but even sheds light into topics like eastern and western storytelling which is not always discussed.No matter if you are into medium or not you should give this book a chance because its that good. Special recommendation for artists who are thinking about creating comics/manga.

Product Review: - a sort of comic book explaining the history, theories and backstories of comics. - everything (well almost everything) is in B&W - few pages only but not the regular A4 print - more bigger and all pages are captivating.

I love to read comics and graphic novels. when i read this book it shows me how big and amazing world of comics is. nicely written and drwan by Scott McCloud.

Les trois livres de Scott McCloud sont généralement recommandés par les enseignants aux USA, ce n'est pas pour rien. J'en possede deux, et je ne me lasse jamais de les relire, lorsque je travaille mes compétences de design ou composition d'image (pour webmastering), ou quand je cale sur une création. Le livre est en anglais, mais les références culturelles ne sont pas toutes, loin s'en faut, américaines. Quand on aime la BD, c'est aussi un plaisir de voir tant de secrets révélés - je ne savais pas qu'il pouvait y en avoir autant, d'ailleurs.

I first owned this classic text about 15 years back, until I 'loaned' it to a student. I didn't mourn the loss of the book so much as the loss of the many many notes I had made in the margins! Anyway it was time to read it again, and Amazon had a generous discount applied to the item, so... bonus! I do agree with one of the other reviews that the paper stock used is the cheapest, about the same newsprint stock as the older comic books, so, appropriate in a way! This wasn't an issue to me, in fact a glossy stock isn't conducive to pencil notes in the margins, so, job done in my use case. The reprint history and ratings speak for themselves, this book is a must read for anybody involved in the field of visual communication, for example like myself teaching painting or like some of my students, graphic design and sign making.

Great information. Bought for a literature/comicbook history class. Recommended for casual reading also.
