I'm not sure how many stars to give... The delivery was a bit botched, but the bass itself is excellent. Evidently there was a mixup between Austin Bazaar and FedEx. The tracking number was issued at 10:45 one morning., but the package wasn't picked up by FedEx until 5:00 p.m. the next day, resulting in my bass being delivered a day late. The bass was double-boxed. The outer box was immaculate, the inner box (from Yamaha) was pretty torn up, but the bass itself was fine. My bass is a lot darker than the photos on the website, almost black. The lighter sunburst color is really only visible under the strings. I wish that weren't the case, but it's still a pretty instrument. I suppose that it's the luck of the draw, and for an inexpensive instrument, I shouldn't complain too loudly. When it arrived, the strings were so slack that my tuner couldn't register the notes. I tuned it and played for a few minutes, then was called away for an hour. When I got back to it, all the strings were a bit flat. Over the next day or two this continued, with the strings a little less flat each time, so evidently, they'd never been brought up to proper tension. I think that's a good thing, the strings should last me longer. The last couple of days it's stayed in tune, so the tuners weren't slipping. As far as I can tell, the neck is straight and the bass is intonated well. I'm waiting for a gig bag to be delivered, then I'll have it properly set up by a guitar tech. I'm a guitar player who decided to try bass. A couple of years ago, I bought a Rumble 40 amp and an Ibanez Mikro (short scale bass) because its scale length isn't much longer than a guitar. Gig bags, straps, storage racks, and etc. for use with a guitar work well with it and it's inexpensive. I enjoyed playing it, but there was an indefinable something missing from its sound. I decided that I might like to take bass lessons and wanted to learn on a regular size bass, so I spent a couple of weeks researching them before deciding on this one. I've only been playing the Yamaha a few days, but I really like its sounds. I'm 70 years old, and like old music. I don't play slap bass, rap, hip hop, reggae, or etc., so I can't comment on how useful it is for those styles. For 1950s-1970s-style country and pop, its everything I could wish for. Many basses power on an active circuit when you plug in the instrument cable. I'm in the habit of leaving the cable plugged into an instrument when putting it back into the rack, so I didn't want a bass which would drain a battery if I did that. This bass has passive pickups (like the Fender P and J basses) and doesn't even have a compartment for a battery. All in all, I'm pretty happy with it.

After years of loving the sounds of the bass guitar in music I finally just had to get into playing it for myself. Did a lot of research and reading, watching reviews and all that, and this Yamaha TRBX174 was my final choice and I could not be happier with it. First thing is I love the style of the body and head, it has a nice clean modern look to it, and I'm happy to have it displayed on it's stand and just looking at it makes me want to pick it up and play. Second the build quality is great, the paint on the body looks amazing, a nice deep metallic blue that the photos don't show off as nice as in person. Neck is full length with 24 frets, a nice smooth satin finish, frets ends were all smooth, no sharp edges at all and a nice smooth fret board. The hardware is good, chrome tuners and bridge and a P/J style set of pickups, two volume and one tone control knobs that feel smooth. I did my own setup after watching some videos, I put on my own new strings right away, a slight truss rod adjustment, lowered the bridge a bit and it's playing and sounding very nice now. For the price this is a great instrument, fine for beginners or anyone really, to get something noticeably better would have cost another $100-200 bucks, and at my skill level this is perfect, a higher end guitar would not make my practicing any easier! No regrets at all with this bass, love the looks, feel, sound and quality, and at this price I'm super happy!
