One of the Best Books
Susan Briscoe's Japanese Quilt Blocks book must be one of the top ten quilt design books ever. I had been searching for a long time for a way to make simple elegant 9-inch patches that are not the same old traditional American items. Briscoe's book has so inspired me on to creating little 9-inch patches that I simply cannot wait to sit at my work table each day to play with further fabric combinations and designs. The extraordinary way she has combined her patches into quilts give me great pleasure and encourage me to do the same. The directions and color photos in the book are excellent. And the rating of each of the 122 designs by difficulty helps, too. I treasure this book. Also, it is the first quilting book I have felt inspired to buy in 20 years!

surprisingly versatile
Best feature is that quilts do NOT require I search out expensive Japanese fabrics -- scrap fabrics like batik/plaidshirtstripes/large florals/etc. can produce lovely surprising results. 132 Japanese crest 9" quilt blocks & sashiko patterns, most easy to adjust to larger block size. Mixing several blocks in same quilt works gracefully here, with restful sophiticated results. Slight strip measurement directions shouldn't be a problem. Beautiful book. Amazon verified purchase.

Oriental yes, but also batiks!
I've looked through this book for at least two years then my quilt guild tasked me to head the Block of the Month program for the 2010-2011 quilt year. Of course I chose to use this book as a starting point. Now 28 members of my guild have bought the book and will make blocks!! I can hardly wait to see the end results. The book assumes you know more than a little about quilting and can figure out how to complete the block but even if you are a beginner (one pin) you can still challenge yourself with blocks that are a level higher(two pins)or for advanced quilters(three pins). I love, love, love the Sashiko patterns and hope to make all of them. The Applique patterns are fabulous and will challenge me but advanced guild members are quite excited about executing their blocks and embellishing them. Highly recommend this book even if you use batiks, contemporary fabric or other material that is not Oriental.

A must have if you love all things with Japanese quilting.
Every page is full of inspiration. I plan on sewing a 'block a week' and end up with an awesome quilt. I have many samples of cloths from my Shibori Dyeing class (with Marjie McWilliams at the Quilt University.)and a Japanese block sampler is the perfect way to use them up. Wonderful table top companion to go with Susan's other book "Japanese Taupe Quilts."

I bought this book as I like to create quilts that are slightly different and wanted to create a quilt for my next project with an Asian theme. This is one of the best instruction books for quilting I have bought (not just pretty pictures). In the words of the book "Japanese quilters combine Japanese designs with Western patchwork and quilting to create quilts with a unique look." It begins with an Introduction to the Japanese block designs, colours and block categories, an explanation of how to use the book and a beautiful gallery of quilts made from the blocks. There is a detailed description of Materials, tools and techniques along with the detailed description for each individual block. I do feel that one needs to be experienced with quilting and not a beginner unless you feel like a challenge as some of the blocks involve applique and detailed work. However, if you are a beginner quilter there are some more simple blocks you can choose from. There is a total of 132 block patterns. The only downside to the book is that I feel over time and much use the pages will come loose from the binding as a couple of pages are already loose at the bottom, but I will just put the pages in a file folder if this happens. Definitely looking forward to working on my next creation. Additional note: I have discovered one issue with some of the block designs. Each of the applique blocks and some of the Sashiko blocks have a template with instructions on how much to enlarge the template (eg.250%). I have discovered that some of the numbers given are incorrect (eg. #78 & #79 blocks). You have to calculate how much to enlarge the templates by trial and error. So double check your template before cutting fabric.
