著者はYou TubeのTEDにも登場している魅力的な女性である。TEDを視聴して、どんな小説を書いてあるのか興味を持ち、Amazonで一番評価が高いと思った本書を手に取った。 主人公のEllaは米国の40歳の米国人女性で、夫と3人の子供に囲まれ、裕福で不自由のない生活をしている。そんな彼女が、ある1冊の書籍の書評を引き受けるところから物語は始まる。 その書籍の舞台はモンゴル帝国の襲来に悩まされる13世紀の中東で、有名な詩人のRumiと、Rumiの人生を根本から変える流浪の宗教者のShams of Tabrizの出会いと別れが描かれている。 そして物語は、Ellaの現在の実生活と、13世紀の書籍の内容が、同時並行で進行し、EllaとRumiの人生観や生活が、根本的に変わっていく様子が描かれる。 作品のテーマはLoveであり、一歩引いて冷静にみると、現在の生活に愛がないことに気づいた中年女性の物語という、割とありふれた話のようにも思えるが、実際に読みだすと物語の意外な展開や、魅力的な登場人物ーにぐいぐい引き込まれ、最後まで一気に読んでしまう不思議な小説である。 英語は、イスラム教の特殊な用語を除けば平易で、非常に読みやすいと感じた。
