Master of adventure!!! I absolutely love love love how he incorporates fiction into actual history! When he writes of the battles he makes you feel like you are witnessing them as they ate so realistic!

I began reading Bernard Cornwell due to the popularity of The Last Kingdom series. I thoroughly enjoyed that series of books, The Grail Quest series, and I am currently enjoying the Richard Sharpe series. Naturally I wanted to read this one as well since I have always enjoyed tales of King Arthur and his knights. I have read so many variations on those characters, some wonderful, some not so much, that I don't consider myself stuck on one idea of King Arthur; a person who most likely existed, but of whom we truly know little. But for some reason, B. Cornwell's Arthur annoyed me more than anything. A brave soldier, an intelligent leader he nonetheless risks the entire kingdom for the love of Guinevere. And, she's even more annoying - consumed by creature comforts and attempting to revive the worship of the egyptian goddess Isis. It's not that Arthur's not perfect that bothers me, no human is, it's just that his marriage to Guinevere stands out as such an enormous risk to the kingdom that he is fighting so hard to strengthen that is just doesn't provide a firm enough base for the rest of the story. Merlin is portrayed as a druid with knowledge, presence and most likely supernatural power as well. He'll stand with Arthur as the best choice for the kingdom but is not necessarily devoted to him as in some other versions. He also has a goal for which he will sacrifice much and many to achieve. This comes up as a review of the series because that's how I bought it. But, I only read the first book. I started the second just to make sure I wasn't missing out on reading the best book ever, but only got in to about 50 pages and the put it down. That is not something I do often but I was disappointed in these legends of King Arthur and this series of B. Cornwell. I did not care for these but if you truly love every King Arthur tale you've ever read, please give them a try - just buy them one at a time.

Books were in excellent condition and are in truth just superb books

Classic Masterpiece.

This is the Bernard Cornwell adaptation of the story of King Arthur and Merlin. Unlike TS White's version this has zero sci-fi magic and he tends to switch many of the characters roles. Having grown up reading "The Once and Future King" I was prepared to not like this three book series. I own two copies now of all three books, one set I keep in the trunk of my car for long drives and traffic. It is nothing short of a masterpiece. If you are unsure, try the first book, "The Winter King" I was furious at the villians and love the hero's. I promise you, there are few Historical Fiction series that can compete with these.

Print is very small making it difficult to read.

They are books. They are also the books I wanted. Arrived in perfect condition. I did not read them, I gifted them. LOL.

Amazing retelling of the story. Very cinematic and well written. A real journey through time (very realistic and groovy medieval details) and myth (nice atmosphere and mystery). Very recommended. The book/object is alright, text clear and readable.

This is a dark, realistic re-telling of the Arthurian legend featuring some of its more prominent characters, like Arthur obviously, alongside Merlin, Nimue, Lancelot and others. Overall it's an amazing story even if you happen to know nothing about the original legend itself. While this is a trilogy it warrants a full read uninterrupted, because each book ends in the middle of a plotline, inviting you to just keep going. I really liked the main characters and their storylines. The pacing is good and you get to see them grow, mature and age across many decades. While I have some reservations about the actual final few scenes, the journey to get there remains unforgettable and at times very dark, violent and bloody. There is certainly very little 'fairy tale enchantment' here and even less chivalry. This is a dark world where kings are weak and selfish, and the concept of a 'true, honourable knight' doesn't even exist, though Arthur tries his best. The books also tackle the themes of religious conflict between the new faith of Christianity and the old Pagan beliefs of the Britons, and I thought it was pretty well done in showcasing the absolute madness and brutality that belongs to both. Overall, highly recommended, especially if you're a King Arthur fan.

Unique characters brought to life within the historical framework of 5th century Britain. Very enjoyable.

These three books came plastic wrapped together (not in a decorative box/case like many trilogies) and were a great gift.
