Impossible to capture the legend of Secretariat
Secretariat was a giant of a horse in so many ways. His heart and his girth far surpassed that of ordinary thoroughbreds, but there was much more to him than that. It is an impossible task to capture all that he was in mere words and this author had a hard task but rose to it admirably. If I have one main criticism, this book would have benefitted greatly from colour photos of him on the track and at stud, his huge presence was captured well on film. His story is entertwined with that of all of those who bred, owned, trained and rode him and sometimes their lives seem to nearly overwhelm his own story. However his is the greater presence by far and in the end you realise that all of them were simply waiting for him to come. If you know anything about racing you will already know that he shattered records, won hearts and was more famous than any other athlete of his time. But even in England where I now live his legend is well known and as James Willoughby thoroughbred expert said, his perfomace in the Belmont Stakes is the one by which all other thoroughbred performances are judged. If you can read this book and not be moved you are not alive! Buy it, but also try your best to find footage of him racing, especially his Belmont. To read more about Secretariat, his origins and his career have a look at an American site dedicated to the thoroughbred. [...]
