Review: I have loved the inheritance cycle since I was a teenager and have read all of the books multiple times and I never get tired of them. To see this book and see the development of Christophers writing over the years and how they have improved is just AMAZING! and Murtagh is stunning in its story telling and completely different style he had to align with for the character of Murtagh. It's compelling and mysterious and continues on with the rough and gritty story line of a man and dragon not given a choice and searching for that needed feeling of acceptance while also hating the world they were forced to be in. Review: Nice sequel... When the 6th?

Murtagh was a book I had heard mixed reviews about. I felt I needed to read the book personally to judge it, and boy did this book hook me! Murtagh begins about a year after the events of the final book of the Inheritance Cycle with the same chapter shown in The Fork, The Witch, and the Worm. From there, it goes into an even more interesting story, shown from Murtagh and Thorn's points of view. Here we discover many things regarding the pair (mild spoilers to follow, so if you don't want to see some revelations from the story, leave now)... 1) Murtagh and Thorn are very different from Eragon and Saphira, preferring to do good wherever they go while attending to their own interests, rather than actively seeking to uphold laws and justice. 2) Murtagh and Thorn have PTSD, and for Thorn, you feel particularly sad, because Galbatorix tormented him so badly that he has claustrophobia. 3) There is an even greater evil out in the most remote parts of Alagaesia than Galbatorix. That evil also has a cult of followers known as the Dreamers, led by a half-elf witch named Bachel. 4) In many ways, Murtagh is more cultured and refined than Eragon. He's familiar with etiquette at nobles' court, understands the going-ons between royal houses, and he understands more regarding the economy of the Broddring Kingdom (the human empire). And what do Murtagh and Thorn do? They investigate and go to confront this evil. We also learn that Murtagh really wants to honor the legacy of Riders who preceded him, and he convinces Thorn to do the same. We also get to see Murtagh make new friends, including Urgals, Werecats and more. We get major character development in Murtagh, and he goes from being wary and ever-suspicious to becoming more open with himself and others. Alagaesia at large has yet to forgive him for his past misdeeds under Galbatorix's enslavement, but Murtagh learns to move past the legacy of his oppressor and that of his equally evil father, Morzan, and forgive himself. We also get many revelations regarding the origin story of Galbatorix, Morzan, and other members of the Thirteen Forsworn, not to mention Durza, and what lurks in the darkest, most evil corners of Alagaesia, where the ground grows hot beneath the feet of those who tread there and blackened stone smolders and burns. This book had me rooting for more, and I can't wait to see the next chapter in Murtagh's story, for which I hope we get a sequel as soon as possible. I can't take the suspense of waiting to know what happens next! As such, my review stands at a solid 5 out of 5 stars. Enjoy, and do not hesitate to voice your own opinions on this successor to the Inheritance Cycle.

This hardcover edition of Murtagh is absolutely beautiful. The dust jacket features raised golden lettering that gives it a really elegant, high-quality feel. But what really impressed me is what’s underneath the actual book cover is a deep red with gold leaf brisingr stamped on it. It feels like a collector’s item. It’s clear a lot of care went into the design of this edition, and it makes the reading experience feel even more special. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the Inheritance Cycle or picking this up as a standalone, this edition is well worth owning. Gorgeous inside and out!
