I love this blade so much! I cannot believe I got this knife for this price! It's beautiful! Balance feels good and of course the quality still amazes me especially given the price. It's very sharp out of the box and feels very durable. Then... The sheath is almost more of my fave than the knife. That leather smells great! Good job!

This knife arrived sharp and beautiful. It has a good weight and feels right in your hand. It is sturdy and solid and definitely worth the $40. You won't be disappointed...

Love this knife, very sharp, fits well in your hand

Exceptional - especially for the sub 30 price tag. This thing is basically a short sword, so keep its length in mind. It has a thick heavy weight blade and a nice wood handle. The blade is 9-3/4 inches long, 1-1/8 wide, and a full 3/16 inch thick through the full tang. The blade is hollow ground. The handle is a nice fine grained stained wood with nice decorative pins. I actually appreciate the simple utilitarian aesthetics. I do wish it maybe had some sort of texture or ribbing though, as it is fairly slick. The biggest ding is the tsuba (cross guard). I like the plain stainless appearance but it is honestly a bit too small, especially considering the handle is so slick. Its currently only about 1-3/4 inch; 2-1/2 inch would be perfect. Being too small risks your hand sliding forward onto the blade. If they are getting them cut I would also give it a bit of a scalloped edge personally. The sheath is also a mixed bag; it looks quite nice and seems decently made. The leather dye/stain they use - absolutely reeks - they really need to find an alternative. The leather on the belt loop portion is much too thin, especially for such a heavy knife. I doubt it will hold up long if used frequently. They need to up the thickness on that first layer of the sheath. While not perfect - it is very nice looking and an exceptional value for the money at its sub 30 price.

Not bad for the money

A week ago, I ordered the "Purple Dragon Japanese fixed blade knife with engraved sheath for belt Tanto knife D2 Steel" I heard a rumor that it was not Full Tang and decided to test it. Sure enough, after less than a minute of chopping, the tiny riveted Tang broke off. I submitted a return for bad description on item and returned the faulty product. I used the money from that refund to purchase this knife. Still wary from my experience, I immediately thrashed this blade upon its arrival. I beat the back of the spine against the corner of a tree stump probably 200 times at full force. Nothing loose, nothing broken. The only reason I stopped was the impact was beginning to hurt my hand. That is my only real gripe about this blade. I'd hate to cover up that beautiful handle with some textured grip, but if it is meant to be used, then is worth being safe. The balance point sits on the second "A" in the word Japan printed on the blade. It seems to have come almost razor sharp out of the box; although the swoop and point near the end are sharper than the belly. Others have said that the sheath smells very bad. They are right. This is some cheap synthetic leather or treated with so many chemicals that any natural odor is imperceptible. Unlike some other options here on amazon, this one is Full Tang. Maybe on strike number 201 it would have broken, but if this is not full tang, I'd be surprised. If anything changes in the future, I will update my review. This blade was the same price as that purple dragon POS, but far more functional and attractive. Check your equipment, fellas. If it is meant to be a wall hanger, don't worry about it. However, if you desire performance of any kind, test your equipment.

I am a 40 year practicioner of Muso-Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iaijutsu. A mouthful, but it's a Japanese sword art. I also collect Japanese swords (real ones-shinken) and knives, typically made in Seki, of Hitachi blue or white steel. This is not traditionally forged, folded, or clay-tempered which would produce hada (grain) and a hamon (temper line). I doubt it is even made in Japan, though it says "Japan" on the blade. It looks suspiciously like stainless steel, which can't be differentially-tempered. You aren't getting a differentially-tempered, folded blade at anywhere near this price anyway. To make such a blade takes hundreds and sometimes thousands of hours. This is ground on a machine, not polished to sharpness using finger-stones in the Japanese manner. That said, I bought it to keep in the trunk of my car for emergencies. I didn't expect it to be as described. It came decently sharp but I'll put a way better edge on it. I don't smell anything weird on the sheath like some have said, smells like regular ol cheap leather to me. Sheath is decent, belt loop a bit thin but the section where the blade goes in is pretty nice. Handle comes with a super flimsy thin leather cord which will be replaced. Three stars because it certainly isn't as described, but will be a decent knock around knife for the trunk. I paid only 27 bucks and it's worth that - I think. It should work well enough to chop some sticks up for traction if I get stuck, cut a piece of rope, or whatever. It's a big honking knife with a thick blade that I won't be too upset if it rusts or edge is damaged. Hardly something I would choose as a primary blade but it seems ok for my purpose.
