Nice if you need a PoE-powered switch
I did not have a good history with Netgear devices, but this was the only small, affordable PoE-powered switch I could find, once my beloved Mikrotik RB260GS switches disappeared from the market. I won't hesitate next time; this Netgear switch has been fast and reliable. It's also plug-and-play -- out of the box, it's configured as a DHCP client and supports jumbo frames and 802.1p/DSCP-based QoS. This switch does not have the full set of Netgear Prosafe switch features, but it's got the basics, including VLANs, rate-limiting, port-based QoS, and port-mirroring -- and you can configure just about everying using the built-in web GUI; no need to install the utility software. This switch requires a PoE injector! If you're only powering the switch itself, you can get by with a TRENDnet TPE-113GI or similar, but if you plan to use the PoE pass-through feature you'll need a PoE+ injector like the TRENDnet TPE-115GI I'm using. Even so, be aware that this little switch can only reliably power ONE 802.3af device, like a 12W (24V/0.5A) IP phone or camera. With long cables, you get about 13W on a single port (no enough for many 802.3at devices), or 8W on each of two ports. Proprietary PoE devices like Ubiquiti WiFi gear won't work at all.

***NOTE*** This switch will not accept AC power from the wall, it can only accept Power over Ethernet. If you do not know what this means DO NOT ORDER THIS SWITCH. For the rest of you still with me, this switch fit perfectly into what I needed. This switch is powered over 802.3at (PoE+) from an upstream HP-E2910al-24G-PoE, and downstream is powers a GS108Tv2. Speed is full gigE full duplex, no worries there. VLAN capability is present and sufficient. The web management capability of the switch is a little neutered, as it participates in LLDP however does seem to have a way to display its own neighbor adjacencies. Regardless, this allowed me to stick this switch in a difficultly managed position, as well as redistribute PoE to another downstream switch in an equally awkward spot.

Way ahead of the curve, but....
I purchased this unit because it sounded like the perfect solution to a current problem; "how can I minimize the number of 'wall-warts' on my power strip?". This little gigabit switch is supposed to pass POE (802.3af) out through 2 ports from a POE+ (802.3at) input. The specs state that it's max passage capacity is 21.5 watts, which should be plenty for two security cameras, even with both running IR leds. Unfortunately, that isn't what happens in the real world. I have this unit on the end of a Cisco 2960S switch (set to 'auto' POE) and it does power this switch and pass POE through one or the other port, just not both at the same time. :( I've tested this unit, not only at the end of a multiple-terminated cable run, but also straight off the 2960S with 'factory-built', 1-foot CAT6 cables and achieved the same result: good power on one or the other port, but not both. To be clear, all ports work great as a 4-port, straight gigabit switch, but 2 of those are supposed to pass POE on both, at the same time, and they don't. It's not really a HUGE problem, just disappointing. I've talked with the Netgear support folks (who are great, BTW!) and I have no doubt that they would happily replace a faulty item, but, for me, it's not worth the effort. It still performs great as a POE-powered gigabit switch (that, by itself, makes this a worthwhile purchase) but I wanted to be able to test/troubleshoot more than one POE item at a time. Oh well.

Great for PoE splitting using existing single Ethernet feed for 2 PoE + 2 other devices.
This is essentially a PoE extender/splitter. A switch that runs on PoE power through its PD port, but also offers PoE pass-through to 2 devices. That is AWESOME. If you want a PoE switch that powers your PoE devices, this is not the correct device. Great for feeds to satellite offices in a warehouse. Great for using a single existing data connection to get 2 VoIP phones and 2 computers/printers running in an office and have everything powered off the main PoE switch. Off a standard PoE supply, it powered the switch and one phone. I'll have to get a beefier supply or PoE+ port to get both pass-through ports working. I wish it worked on less PoE power. It seems the switch plus 2 low-power phones would not exceed the 15W budget. Probably gigabit is what's eating up the extra power. Would be nice if you could force this into a low-power FE 100Mb mode to accomplish that. ** no it doesn't come with a power adapter. That's not surprising, and keeps this device cheaper. Who wants that when you're buying it to use with PoE? What's important is that it has NO PORT for using an optional power adapter. It can ONLY be powered via PoE.

Ottimo prodotto, affidabile e di buona fattura con il suo case in metallo che da l'idea di solidità, ha anche l'interfaccia web, al 90% degli utenti non serve ma è un qualcosa in più, forse solo un po' complesso leggerla. Non un limite suo ma della tecnologia POE e dell'injector che uso, fate attenzione a quale potenza in ouptut vi serve per i device che volete alimentare, così da valutare l'input necessario e il consumo dello switch stesso (GS105PE), ad esempio avendo con la mia configurazione un Raspberry al momento non lo regge, dovrei risolvere cambiando il poe injector a monte con uno più potente così da coprire il consumo dello switch più quello del raspberry, ma ho optato per risolvere collegarlo direttamente prima.

I needed a remote switch without the hassles of having to use yet another power outlet. Another requirement was that it has to be a managed switch and to support multiple VLANs with 802.1q and without big dollars attached to it. I personally find the GUI a little odd to use as I am more of a CLI guy but once I figured it all out and had it configured, it works perfectly as per its intended task.

Eigentlich war mein Grundkonzept für meine Netzwerktopologie keine Switches zu kaskadieren. Daher liegen bei mir sehr viel Netzwerkkabel in der Wand. Aber jetzt ist es passiert, das ein Netzwerkanschluß zu wenig da ist. Daher habe ich den NETGEAR GS105PE Switch gekauft, da mein "Root Switch" ein Cisco 26 Port PoE fähiger Switch ist, und ich auf Netzteile, und noch mehr Kabel verzichten wollte. Der Karton des NETGEAR GS105PE ist recht klein, es ist ein üblicher brauner Karton für so ein Switch. Da der kleine Netgear Switch eher im Business Sektor anzusiedeln ist, wäre eine bunte Hochglanz Verpackung eher eine Überraschung. In der Verpackung ist der Netzwerkswitch, eine kleine deutsche Anleitung, ein englischspachiges Faltblatt bzgl. der Garantie, und ein englischsprachiges Faltblatt über Geräte Sicherheits Informationen, und Software Update Informationen. Es sind noch jede menge andere Sprachversion der Anleitung vorhanden, und ein paar weitere Faltblätter in chinesisch (???)... Es ist auch noch eine kleine Tüte mit zwei Schrauben, und Dübeln dabei für die Wandmontage. Wichtig bei diesem Switch ist, das er ausschließlich über PoE versorgt werden kann. Es gibt KEINE Möglichkeit den Switch klassisch mit einem Netzteil zu betreiben! Für mich ist das kein Problem, ich habe in meinem Cisco den entsprechenden Power PoE konfiguriert, und der Switch wurde dann auch sofort mit Energie versorgt. Ich habe die beiden Endgeräte am Switch angeschlossen, und das war es letztlich. Alles funktioniert wie erwartet. Das hat man recht selten - auspacken - zusammenstecken - funktioniert! Ich habe dem Switch aber dann doch konfiguriert, da ich dem Switch zu besseren Identifikation einen Namen vergeben habe, und überprüft habe, ob die aktuellste Firmware auf dem Gerät ist. Das war übrigens der Fall. Beim ersten einloggen muß man übrigens eine neues Passwort vergeben. Fazit: Ich habe an dem Switch absolut nichts zu meckern. Es funktioniert alles so wie gewünscht. Der Preis ist soweit in Ordnung. Auch die Anleitung ist absolut ausreichend. Das initiale Passwort ist dort nämlich genannt. Ich kann diesen Switch empfehlen falls man eine einfache Erweiterung im Netzwerk benötigt, und einen PoE versorgten Switch sucht!

I had a 800 ft run and had to insert something to extend the network signal from a PoE switch. It was a connection from one switch to another, so I initially inserted an extender. To my surprise, the PoE extender would not start up unless there was a current draw first. Turns out I had to 'kick start' the injector every time there was a power outage. As my client was doing some construction in the parking levels, this was not uncommon and they would loose all the cameras on one end of the building. Getting power to this particular location to insert a switch was complicated, so I desperately scoured the internet and found this little gem. It worked like gangbusters. It draws PoE, so the connection is restored after an outage. Absolutely thrilled!
