Yes, it looks plastic with its thermo-spike guard on but it's a fine cooking utensil! The power-on/off button is a bit hidden on the top and takes some force but works great - and you get used to it. The temperature read-out actually rotates in 90º increments (up/down/left-up/right-up) - what a fantastic feature as I don't have the sharpest eyes and remember twisting head & shoulders to read my old thermometer (which died when submerged in soapy water). Very fast reading temps and stays solid. Easy to use in my oven, on top of the stove and on the BBQ. A quality tool that is highly recommended.
