Silica has a lot of uses; I am using it to rebuild my bones and protect my teeth. (see "Strong Bones Need Silica"). People think bones are all about calcium, but this isn't true. I like the smaller size because it's more portable, and I can keep it with me. This is what one person had to say about this important mineral: " Silica is more prevalent than calcium in bone. This is because it also makes up the collagen matrix of bone which is actually 80% of total bone mass. A recent study of the effectiveness of calcium supplementation in preventing bone fracture revealed that **calcium alone was not effective**. The study involved 35,000 middle aged and older women and is the largest study to date examining the effects of calcium and vitamin D on bone health. (for a complete discussion on the details of why calcium is not the answer, please read "The Calcium Lie 2" by Robert Thompson. It's an eye opener). While previous studies investigating calcium supplementation have produced mixed results, this study quite convincingly concluded that calcium did not produce the expected results. Calcium supplementation provided no protection from fractures or colorectal cancer, but did increase the risk of kidney stones. Had the researchers looked at silica or a combination of silica and calcium, the results would have been dramatically different. Bones, like cement, require a compliment of minerals, the most important being silica followed by calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus." But wait, there's more: " Aided by the official laboratories of France, Kervran and associates concluded that the calcium needed by animal cells seldom is derived from the mineral calcium; rather, it is the product of “biological transformations” from silica and other elements. For example, chickens totally deprived of calcium and silica, produced soft-shelled eggs. When “mica” was added to their diets, the hens’ ability to lay calcium rich, hard-shelled eggs was restored. Mica contains no calcium; but, it does contain potassium and silica, both of which can be biologically transmutated into calcium. Additionally, an analysis of incubated chicken eggs disclosed that hatched chicks contained 400% more calcium than did the egg from which it came. Examination of eggs prior to incubation revealed the yolk and the white to be separated from the shell by a membrane rich in silica. After incubation, the membrane was no longer present. It is theorized that the silica membrane had transmutated into calcium, which accounted for the four-fold increase of calcium in the hatched chicks. These same researchers conducted other controlled animal experiments. When silica was added to the diets of animals with broken bones, the bones healed much faster and stronger than the bones of control group animals deficient in silica but rich in calcium. Treated with adequate doses of silica, patients suffering from musculoskeletal disorders exhibited a dramatic increase in mobility and marked reduction in pain. Degenerative disease almost always is accompanied by silica deficiencies. Hard arteries contain 140% less silica than normal arteries. Tuberculosis patients have 41% less overall silica, with an almost complete lack of silica in their bones. It has been reported that cancer is rare in areas rich in soluble silica. Connective tissue of cancer patients evidences a significant lack of silica. Connective tissue consists of collagen, elastin and muccopolysaccharides. All these important molecules house large amounts of silica. Collagen, largely made up of silica, is (in a sense) the glue that holds us together." Who knew? I'm taking this every day. Has no taste in any beverage I've tried. The smaller bottle makes it easier to travel with.
