Will the extension work for the expansions as well? say i wanted to add more player to seafarers

yeah if you don't get this 5-6 player expansion you won't have the main pieces to play the 5th and 6th players in seafarers. however if you just want to play four players, you can with seafarers expansion... there are also a 1-4 version of seafarers, and a 5-6 extension of seafers. so you need to buy 4 things to play seafers with 6 players. sorry if that doesn't make sense i think i did like the crappiest job of explaining..

My base Catan is the 3rd edition (off-white box, with red sides and the crest in the upper left). Will this expansion work with the 3rd edition?

The changes are all aesthetic. The card backs and tiles have different art work, so your board/pieces will look mismatched and the cards will look different. But they can be used together.

Is there an easy way to tell which pieces belong to which set (for ease of separating the two afterwards, if I want to go back to 3-4 people again)?

An easy way my family has always done it is, after opening the expansion pack (or determining what is part of the expansion pack if you have already opened it) is we put a small E on the back of the expansion pack pieces, and then keep them in a separate package as well.

Have you tried this with 4 players and found that it makes the game more enjoyable (less crowded board, less spacing conflicts)?

Have played with 5 players. I think that using the expansion pieces with 4 players would definitely make it easier to acquire resources.
