Trying to buy some for a Christmas gift, what does a 85 set mean together they add to 85?

Yes. It says you receive two 2.5 lb, two 5lb, two 10 lb, and two 25 lb weights. Depending on the person that your buying them for I would say this is a set that is perfect for a beginner, as the weights are lighter.

How many plates do I get if I place one order ?

It seems the lighter weights (up to 10lbs) come in pairs while heavier (25lbs +) come in singles. However, if you hover over each option, it will tell you 10lb, pair or 25lb, single for example.
